Episode 075 “Save the DRAM-a for your mama”

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

On this week’s episode, the guys discuss how much time they waste on digital platforms and social media, a potential collusion regarding DRAM, “perfect” games, and our own zombie apocalypse soundtracks!

—-more—-

Instagram Wants You To Know How Much Of It’s Wasting Your Time

The latest trend to hit social media is the acknowledgment that we all waste way too much time there in the course of a day. Instagram appears to be set to release a new feature that will tell you exactly how much time you spend on the app each day. On the surface it seems like a very pro-active tool to help people reign in their social media use, but is it possible they have other motivations? It’s all more data they can collect and how valuable would it be to be able to target ads to users that they know are using the app 5 hours each day versus just 2.

New Lawsuit Alleges Anti-Trust Collusion Between DRAM Manufacturers

A new lawsuit alleges that Samsung, Hynix, and Micron — which together control 96 percent of the DRAM market — have unjustly colluded to raise the price of DRAM from January 1, 2016 through February 1, 2018. The suit notes that RAM prices fell from 2014-2015, when the three companies were independently acting to increase DRAM capacities, but then sharply rose beginning in 2016 as all three firms decided to restrict DRAM growth to stop downward price pressure and to lead to a price increase.

Amazon has a new delivery method

Being rolled out in limited markets, Amazon now has a service called Amazon Key In-Car, which allows your packages to be delivered to the trunk of your car rather than your front porch. It’s an effort to deter what are being called “Porch Pirates”, people that watch for and steal packages off your front porch when they are delivered.

Atari will be offering two versions of the gaming system: a “time-limited” Collector’s Edition featuring the faux wood-front panelling and the $200 Onyx Edition, which is just black. Oddly, it doesn’t appear that either of these options will include a controller as the announcement reads “other packages will include the Classic Joystick and Modern Controller.”

John Wick: Chapter 3’ Details: Keanu Reeves Needs to ‘Kill His Way Out of New York City’ in Next Sequel

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons…he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”

Another new football league is coming … and it’s launching next year!

The XFL won’t be the only new professional football league set to launch over the next couple of years.  The Alliance of American Football was unveiled at a press conference in New York. This new league has an official debut date (Feb. 9, 2019) and a TV partner (CBS Sports Network).  “I think this will be complementary to the NFL,” said former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who will serve as the AAF’s head of player relations.

Apple retail store workers cited in the Bloomberg story claim to be selling “fewer than 10 HomePods a day.” Apple’s no stranger to lackluster sales when it comes to new products, but the HomePod seems to be fighting a war on multiple fronts, and doing poorly in each one.

Twin Galaxies Removes Former Donkey Kong Champ Billy Mitchell’s High Scores

Controversial arcade game player Billy Mitchell’s record scores have been removed from the Twin Galaxies leaderboards following a dispute earlier this year that many were performed using an arcade emulator. The ruling, which comes after a lengthy arbitration process, also bans Mitchell from further participation on the leaderboards, bringing an end to the King of Kong star’s high-score glory. All of Mitchell’s records on Twin Galaxies, an organization that tracks video game records and high scores, have been scrubbed. These marks included a 1,062,800-point score for the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, as well as scores set between 2005 and 2007.

Sega announces the Mega Drive Mini

The company also announced that it would be bringing a number of classic games to the Nintendo Switch this summer.  Sega says that the tentatively-named Mega Drive Mini is being released in conjunction with the console’s 30th anniversary, and that it will carry a number of classic games. The company has dabbled with retro hardware before: it has licensed its name to hardware company AtGames (which has also done retro Atari consoles) to produce Genesis clones, including the Sega Genesis Flashback that Polygon wasn’t a huge fan of. On Facebook, AtGames revealed that the forthcoming Mega Drive Mini will be powered by its hardware.
