Musings of a Blerd: April 26th is Alien Day

Yesterday, Twentieth Century Fox proclaimed that April 26 will be known as Alien Day.  In a similar notion to last year’s Back to the Future Day, Alien Day will celebrate the science fiction horror franchise, Alien that started with the first film by Ridly Scott that was released in 1979. The date 4/26 is a nod to the exmoon LV-426 where the xenomorphs were first discovered by Ripley and her crew mates.

To celebrate, Fox has lots of products that will be released commemorating the glorious day. One such product is the release of a limited edition replica of AliensReebok Stompers. The shoes were worn by Ripley and the Android Bishop (Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henrikson) in the films, and will be available starting April 26th at and select Reebok stores around the globe.
Another product that will be released is an original drama from titled Alien: Out of the Shadows.  Written by Tim Lebbon and Dirk Maggs, the  story takes place between Alien and Aliens, and stars Rutger Hauer, Corey Johnson, Matthew Lewis, Kathryn Drysdale, Laurel Lefkow, Andrea Deck, and Mac McDonald. You can read the synopsis below:

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell – and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors….

Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

Musings of a Blerd Black History Month Infographic: Black Star Wars Characters & Actors

Previously posted on my personal blog

If you weren’t aware, February is Black History Month. In honor of that, I wanted to mix my love of Star Wars with my love of blackness. So here’s an infographic that I created using Piktochart that lists the black characters in the Star Wars universe. Granted this might not be a complete list but I did scour high and low to find as many black characters as I could. In addition there’s a bonus section listing black actors who appeared via their voice acting, motion capture, or as a member of the many alien races in the Star Wars universe.  Enjoy:

Musings of a Blerd: Art From Computer Graphics’ Star Wars Reimagined Contest

Forgive me my fellow nerds and geeks, it’s been two weeks since my last posting. But I’m here today with a new post, it’s Star Wars related but something a little different. Let’s begin shall we?

Whether it’s a book, movie, video, etc. one of the ways creators flesh out their ideas through concept art. Concept art can be really amazing and at times, we lament about the pieces that aren’t used in a project. Well the folks over at Computer Graphics hosted a contest titled Star Wars Reimagined.  The premise of the contest was basically for those who entered to reimagine their favorite character, creature or vehicle from the Star Wars universe and to be as creative about it as they could.

And the results have been freaking awesome! Behold some of the entrees:

Musings of a Blerd: Awesome Star Wars Books: The Perfect Weapon

And welcome back to my column! With Star Wars fever at an all time high, I’m starting the new year off by taking a look at some awesome Star Wars books. These books are either from the official cannon, the expanded universe, and beyond. Today’s book is an short story ebook titled Star Wars: The Perfect Weapon.

Benzine Netal

Written by  Delilah S. Dawson, the 52 page story focuses on a character featured in the Force Awakens, Bazine Netal, who viewers briefly saw in Maz Kanata’s castle.

The short story gives readers backstory on what Bazine was up to before the events in the Force Awakens. Bazine is a mercenary, highly skilled at being a  master of disguise, and armed with a blade, a blaster, or her bare hands. The story is well paced and goes deeper into who Bazine is and what her motivations are.

The Perfect Weapon is easy to read, consists of 11 chapters, and can be read in one sitting. It’s only available in ebook ($1.99) and audiobook ($2.99) formats.  I highly recommend it.

Musings of a Blerd: Awesome Star Wars Books-Star Wars: The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections

Happy New Year!

It’s been a long while since I’ve written (life got in the way) but this black nerd lady has returned with her musings. I’m going to try and attempt to post here on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is part of my writing new years resolution so bare with me as I try to do my best to not break it. No let’s get on with it shall we?

In nerd/geekdom, 2015 ended with the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and there’s been many articles, gifs, fan art, etc. to celebrate and discuss the film. I’ve only seen the film once so far (I know what’s wrong with me?) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. To celebrate, I would like to feature Star Wars books that I find intriguing-I mean just plain awesome. These books come from the now official cannon, the expanded universe, and beyond.

The first book I’m featuring is titled Star Wars: The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections Written by Jason Fy, the book was released on the day that the film arrived in theaters. Inside readers will discover the juicy details of the vehicles and spaceships featured in the film. The book contains a total of 12 profiles each explaining the backstory of its subject.

Here are few pictures of what you’ll find in the book:

Pretty awesome right? The price is also awesome as the book costs $12.58 on Amazon.  I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely purchasing a copy. Well that’s it for now, I’ll catch ya’ll on the flip side!

Musings of a Blerd: Thorsday # 6 The Lovers of Thor

Thor picture from

Happy Thorsday people of Midgard! Tis been a few weeks and the break was long needed. But rejoice! I Lady Adina hast returned with a new entry! Today I speak of the lovers of Thor. Yes our thunderer has had several romances but these five mighty women have been his main interests for many a time. And here they are:

Lady Sif:

Journey_into_Mystery_Vol_1_650_Acuna_Variant_TextlessNo lover has been more significant to Thor than our Lady Sif. This warrior is Thor’s principal love interest but Midgard and other women have gotten in the way of their love. In spite of these things, their love much like life has manages to find a way.

Jane Foster:

250px-Jane_Foster_(Earth-616)This lady had many adventures with the thunderer. A nurse by trade, she was involved in love triangle with Thor and Dr. Donald Blake, unaware that they were one and the same.  One day Thor takes Jane to Asgard where she was granted immortality and goddess status. Unfortunately the All-Father disapproved of the union and Jane was stripped of her powers and promptly returned to Midgard without memories of the realm eternal.  But fret not my dear readers, for love truly dost conquer all and soon she was reunited with her former lover.

The Enchantress:

Amora_(Earth-616)_Mighty_Thor_Vol_1_14One of the Mighty Thor’s most notable enemies and lovers. She has tried over and over again to seduce Thor while eliminating her competitors with her magic, but she has always failed. Once Thor willingly had a romance with her!  It was during a time when Odin abandoned Thor on Earth without his godly powers.  Eventually Thor and the Enchantress were married when he reclaimed the throne of Asgard. In a dark future that Amora helped her husband create, they ruled both Asgard and Midgard with an iron fist and even had a child named Magni. But all of this became undone when Thor visited the past in order to prevent this future. Talk about heartbreak!

Lorelei_(Asgardian)_(Earth-616)_008Just like her sister the Enchantress, Lorelei has also used magic to gain the affections of Thor. With Loki’s help, she gave Thor an elixir that would cause him to fall for her. However this did not work as her sibling’s jealousy caused Lorelei to fall in love with Loki instead and Heimdall exposed the plot.

Brunnhilde_(Earth-616)_from_Avengers_World_Vol_1_15_0001Against the wishes of the All-Father, this valkyrie attempted to save Thor’s life when he was incarnated as Sigmund. She failed but was able to save Sigmund’s pregnant wife Sieglinde.  As a result Odin punished Brunnhilde by taking her powers and casting her into a deep sleep. Eventually, Thor wakes her as the reincarnated Siegfried the son of Sigmund and Sieglinde. The two become lovers but under the influence of magic, Siegfried betrays Brunnhilde. Despite this betrayal, Brunnhilde still loves him and jumps into his blazing funeral pyre after he is killed.

Moved by this selfless act, Odin fully restores Brunnhilde and Thor but wipes their memories, because he’s the All-Father and does whatever he wants.

Musings of a Blerd Presents: Top 5: My Favorite YouTube Channels

Happy New Year! After a long hiatus, I have emerged from my cocoon with new Inhuman powers and I bring you a new entry titled Top 5. Today I list my favorite YouTube channels so let’s count them down shall we?

5. CinemaSins and Screen Junkies

I love both of these channels so much that they have tied for fifth place on my countdown. Both of these channels have one thing in common, movies. CinemaSins counts all of the sins in a film with a humor and snark. There’s also their “How to make a ______ movie” series which is also great.  Screen Junkies has lots of funny stuff on their channel but my favorite is their Honest Trailers. Each trailer states what we all have been thinking and will make you laugh and love or hate each film even more.

4. Swoozie

This handsome fella is from the area that I call home O-Town (Orlando) and he tells stories in such a way that not only are you entertained, you also learn something.  This channel will definitely cheer you up when you’re having a bad day.

3. Black Nerd Comedy

Whether it’s his rants, interviews, or his awkward talks with girls, Andre is just an entertaining fella. If you love reminiscing about nostalgic topics such as 90’s films, the Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,  or just want to talk about video games, this channel is definitely for you.

2. The Rad Brad

Speaking of video games, meet the King of the YouTube walkthroughs. I’ve been a subscriber since TellTale’s The Walking Dead Season One and have enjoyed every minute of it. Brad’s a funny guy and you’ll laugh anytime he says “Jesus!” or whenever he checks up on his adorable dog Chubs. He doesn’t talk when the characters are talking and he always tries to show different aspects of the game-the main story, side missions, and just other things you can do.

1. Aggressive Comix

Finally my favorite channel Aggressive Comix. I’ve been a fan of this channel since it debuted with Geekgasm which is hosted by Jenny Lorenzo. The channel also features Secrets of the Booze which shows you how to make a geeky cocktail or drink, in addition to convention vids that feature cosplayers and other funny videos.

Musings of a Blerd: My Top 4 Favorite Things From The TMNT Universe

People of Midgard, Thorsday will return next week with another new entry. This week our mighty thunderer Thor has granted us permission to discuss another topic, one which is almost as worthy as the god of thunder himself. I am speaking of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That’s right these turtles in a half shell possess turtle power and are once again after a hiatus arriving back on the big screen at midnight.

Because alas, because of Michael Bay’s influence (he’s the producer on this film) on yet another sacred thing from our childhood, many fans of the green quartet await their arrival with fear and dread, while others are optimistic, while some want to surround Bay and the movie with their flaming torches and pitchforks.  But I say thee nay!

Today we will celebrate these four green brothers! Today we are canceling the ninja turtle apocalypse!

Without further ado here are my top four (in honor of each brother) TMNT picks that fans new and old alike ought to check out.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1980’s Cartoon

This was my introduction to the green machine. It was silly and fun and just down right entertaining. I remember my sister and I playing with our cousin Alex. He owned many of the Turtle toys which included the van and the blimp. I even recall watching Michelangelo in the TV special Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue. It was where I learned the word Cowabunga and learned all about the numerous weird pizza toppings the turtles enjoyed.

Hearing the late James Avery voicing the Shredder was awesome and there were so many times where I laughed at old tin head’s plans failing and him and Krang butting heads. This show was definitely a great part of my childhood.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990’s Films

Let’s get this out of the way we all know that out of the three the first was the best. But I gotta admit that I enjoyed watching the turtles dance and Vanilla Ice perform the Ninja Turtle rap (Go ninja, go ninja go!) no matter how corny it was. I have all three and they always bring a smile to my face.

3. Turtles Forever 2009 Animated Film

Whoever had the idea to bring the 2003 cartoon turtles and the 80’s cartoon turtles together was a genius. There’s even a surprise near the end which I won’t spoil for you which was even more genius. Seeing the 2009 Shredder and the 80’s Shredder onscreen in the same room was amazing. This was a fun film. The only downside to the film was that the voice actors for the 80’s cartoon characters weren’t the original ones. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s available on Youtube.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Original Comic & Current Ongoing Comic at IDW

Growing up, I had no idea that the turtles I watched on TV originated from a darker version in a comic book. I found out on Free Comic Book Day a few years ago on the 25th anniversary for TMNT. At my comic shop they handed out the reprinted copies of the first comic book in which the four brothers made their first appearance. I’m glad I went and got my copy.

Fast forward a few years to 2011 where IDW started their ongoing ninja turtle comic. Along with new writers, original TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman is involved and the stories have been fantastic so far. I encourage you to check the main series and offshoots out. You won’t regret it.

And that my dear turtle fans is my top four. There is so much in the turtle multiverse to enjoy so go forth and explore! Your Lady Adina commands it! Let us give thanks for the turtles and pray that this film won’t be as bad as we think it might be with the following words:

“It’s ninja time!”

“Turtle power!”

“Go green machine!”

Happy Thorsday, happy Ninja Turtle Day! I leave you with this:

Come on, you know you liked it.
