CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES

Season Episode  “The Recruits” (Date: 12  Oct 2016)
Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/10/13/arrow-5-things-you-might-have-missed-in-the-recruits/

  1. Return of the salmon ladder – Curtis is shown attempting the salmon ladder, and the salmon ladder is an actual thing and not created for the show
  2. Amertek -Even before they were the manufacturers of the Genesis Day missiles, Amertek were pretty sketchy characters. Amertek Industries is a weapons manufacturer, tech conglomerate and defense contractor arguably best known for their biggest gun (literally and figuratively), the “Toastmaster” BG-80. Designed by John Henry Irons, their brutality turned him off of weapons-making and he left Amertek to go into hiding, taking on the name Henry Johnson. The guns would later make their way into the hands of street gangs in Metropolis and Washington, DC. Seeing his weapons on the streets, coupled with the then-recent death of his idol Superman, led Irons to take on the armored superhero identity of Steel.
  3. Ragman – In the show, Ragman’s family was killed when the missile hit Havenrock. In the comics, Ragman is a Gotham-based vigilante who wears the mystical Suit of Souls, from which his powers come. Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Ragman has a bit of a Ghost Rider thing going on, with the costume allowing him to take the souls of the guilty — except that in the case of Ragman, he can summon their abilities later in battle. By being used in this way, the evil can actually earn redemption and passage to Heaven.

ARROW NEWS:

  1. Supergirl and Arrow Boss Says Ollie and Kara won’t get along (Date: 11 Oct 2016)
As per Andrew Kreisberg regarding the crossover “
Part of Oliver’s [Stephen Amell] journey in those episodes is he’s kind of hit his breaking point for things he’s willing to accept. He’s had Mirakuru soldiers, the Lazarus Pit, magic, and Damien Darhk, but flying aliens who can incinerate you with their eyes is one beyond the pale for him. He’s keeping his distance, which is a very Oliver thing to do. Even Kara comments, ‘Does he not like me?’ Barry’s like, ‘No, that’s kind of how he treats everybody.’

  1. Guillermo del Toro has an open invite to direct Arrow (Date: 8 Oct 2016)
del Toro teamed up with Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim for Trollhunters, a new animated series.  Guggenheim was asked about NYCC if del Toro might appear to do an episode of Arrow.
“I’d be lying if I said I never broached the topic with him,” Guggenheim says. “He’s so busy and he is filming right now actually up in Toronto.”

“He’s got a standing invitation,” Guggenheim concludes.

  1. Flash Hits a Series Low Rating (Date: 12 Oct 2016)
The latest episode of The Flash, titled Paradox, hit a series low 1.0/4 in the rating share and drew in 2.75 million viewers overall. The season started off with a dip in ratings, as the premiere episode averaged a 1.2 in the demographic and drew in 3.1 million viewers, which was down from 3.6 million in its season 2 premier

  2. Supergirl premier rockets CW ratings to 8-year high  (Date: 11  Oct 2016)
Supergirl premiere got 3 million viewers and a 1.1 18-49 demo rating. This episode is the most-watched Monday night show on the CW since a 2008 episode of “Gossip Girl.” On CBS, the season 1 finale drew in 6.1 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demo

  1. Arrow Boss Teases Most Ambitious Crossover yet (Date: 13 Oct 2016)
The arrival of the Dominators will force the Arrowverse’s superheroes to team up for what Guggenheim calls their “most ambitious” crossover yet.

“This year,” Guggenheim continues, “we’re doing by far the most ambitious crossover we’ve ever done. It’s basically a huge three-part story that also brings in Supergirl, so it’s crossing over all four shows. It’s telling one big epic movie of a story. It’s not setting up any other spin-offs, it’s just big, bombastic, huge action. There’s also some really poignant character moments. There’s a lot of plot lines, particularly I would say in Flash and Legends, that come to fruition in the crossover. It’s by far the most ambitious thing we’ve ever attempted. I want to say it’s by far one of the most ambitious things anyone in network television has ever attempted. It’s completely insane.”

  1. Supergirl will not Move into the Flarrow ‘verse (Date: 8 Oct 2016)
Fans had speculated and hoped that a move to the CW might unify Supergirl with the Flarrow universe during the upcoming crossover.  Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg explain how the jump will work saying “Not for her entire world, but Kara will be traveling from her dimension to our dimension, “our” being the world that The Flash, Arrow, and Legends lives in.”

  1. James Olson Becomes Guardian on Supergirl (Date: 12 Oct 2016)
James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) is about to make the move from faithful sidekick to kickass masked vigilante later this season on The CW’sSupergirl.

Via Andrew Kresberg: “James has a pretty big turn coming up. These next few episodes are going to make him realize that being a photographer… is not enough for him, so he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory that we’re really pumped by. James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante and he’s going to become Guardian — complete with the shield — which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara [Melissa Benoist], because he has decided not to tell her. Now there’s this new masked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes, and it becomes a push and pull about who gets to decide who gets to be a hero? He’s recruited Winn [Jeremy Jordan] to help him, Winn is his man in the van, so the two of them are doing this together. Winn and James together is comedy gold. Watching Winn, as he takes his job at the DEO, but then he’s lying to everybody about how he’s spending his nights, because he’s going out with James, and how he walks in exhausted or walks in with a black eye and says he walked into a door, is the fun excitement of building these first 10 episodes.”

  1. Did Flashpoint create a future Legends of Tomorrow superhero? (Date: 13 Oct 2016)
While Barry visited Felciity in this week’s episode of The Flash, he learned that Diggle has a son now. Could this be the John Diggle, Jr. we met in the Legends episode called “Star City 2046”?

CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES

Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/10/05/arrow-easter-eggs-and-dc-comics-references-in-legacy (comicbook.com)

  1. Captain Pike –  Is that a Star Trek reference? We really can’t decide. Either way, per his nametag, that police captain talking to Thea in the opening scene appears to be “Captain Pike,” the captain of the USS Enterprise immediately prior to James T. Kirk.
  2. Lonnie Machin – A recurring villain from season four of Arrow, Lonnie Machin (the first baddie Oliver fights in season five) is better known to DC Comics fans as the antihero Anarky.
  3. Wild Dog – the first new member of  Team Arrow version 2.0 was introduced to the audience, in the form of Wild Dog, a hockey mask-wearing, gun-toting vigilante who was inspired by — and then shot in the kneecap by — Green Arrow. The character first appeared in Wild Dog #1 in 1987, making him one of the first new superheroes created following Crisis on Infinite Earths. Created by Road to Perdition writer Max Allan Collins, “his super power is guns.”
  4. Konstantin Kovar – Konstantin Kovar is the father of Leonid Kovar, better known as Red Star.  In the comics, Konstantin originally wasn’t a villain, but a relatively benign figure: an archaeologist who unearthed a nasty bit of business that gave his son powers. But Red Star himself, a loyal communist in the Soviet era, was occasionally a problem for the other heroes before he turned his life around.  Eventually, he would become a bad guy in service of the Soviet Union — something that might make him an interesting figure going forward in case Anatoly Knyazev’s comic book destiny of becoming the cybernetically-enhanced “KGBeast” is to become part of Arrow‘s story.
  5. Tobias Church – Church’s nickname is apparently Charon, the ferryman of Hades from Greek mythology. There is a Charon in DC Comics, although he shares basically nothing in common with this version. This is something that will be repeated again in the episode: choosing a historical/mythological meaning instead of a contemporary/comics one.
  6. Vigilante – “Mr. Ski Goggles,” as Felicity calls him, is actually Vigilante, a DC Comics antihero created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.  Perez provided the police sketch seen on Felicity’s computer screen.  Created during Marv Wolfman’s time on the New Teen Titans, Vigilante in the comics is a former New York district attorney who’s set on the path of justice after hsi family is killed by the mob. The CW describes him similarly: Chase is “Star City’s new district attorney and an ally of Mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who aims to clean up the streets through the legal system.”
  7. Hub City and Bludhaven – According to Detective Malone, before he made his way to Star City, apparently he haunted Hub City — the home of The Question — and Bludhaven, the home of Nightwing.
  8. Ross Paints – Is that a little bit of free advertising for comic book artist and painter Alex Ross on the side of the truck Tobias Church and his goons are driving to their crime spree?
  9. Bertinelli – Whoever the head of the Bertinelli crime family is now that Helena has killed her father, he makes an appearance here — only to be immediately killed by Tobias Church’s men.

  3. Arrow’ Producer: How Oliver will juggle being mayor and Green Arrow in season 5 (Date: 05 Oct 2016)
In an interview with Variety, Wendy Mericle discussed how poorly Ollie is as a mayor and Ollie’s time with the Bratva, but she reveals a hint about Diggle – “And yeah, Flashpoint will have an impact on him, especially in respect to his family life.”

com goes into the history of Wild Dog. Covering his first appearance in “Wild Dog #1” in 1987 to his Booster Gold run. Last October, The CW’s Arrow opened its fourth season with 2.67 million viewers; however, on Wednesday, only 1.9 million viewers tuned-in for the show’s fifth season premiere, which is a drop of 29%, and it pulled in a paltry 0.7 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, which is a decline of 36 percent from a year ago.

  6. Arrow: Stephen Amell talks legacy, Russia, and why Prometheus is the right villain for season 5 (Date: 05  Oct 2016)
In an interview with IGN, Stephen Amell discusses season 5. When asked about Prometheus, Stephen said, “
Prometheus is a villain that is a byproduct of Oliver Queen being Green Arrow. That’s something that you get to do once you’re five years into a show. In a lot of ways, I think the most success that we’ve had with a villain, in my mind, was with Manu Bennett as Deathstroke. One of the reasons is because we got to tell a really personal story. We got to tell the story, sort of the dueling time of their time on the island and then their time in the Starling City at the time. Because Prometheus is a villain of Oliver’s creation, so to speak, I feel like it will bring in that personal element as well.”

Next Week:       Arrow – Season 5 Episode 1 – “Legacy”

NEW BEGINNINGS — After Laurel’s (Katie Cassidy) death and the departures of both Diggle (David Ramsey) and Thea (Willa Holland) from Team Arrow, Oliver (Stephen Amell) takes to the streets solo to protect Star City’s citizens as the Green Arrow. With Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) guiding him from the bunker, Oliver is forced to deal with a city that has become overrun with both criminals and a slew of new (and painfully inexperienced) vigilantes. Watching Oliver try to balance his jobs as both the mayor and also the protector of Star City, Felicity suggests he form a new team, but Oliver resists. However, when a deadly new criminal, Tobias Church (guest star Chad L. Coleman), enters the picture, Oliver realizes the best thing for the city might be a new team of superheroes. Meanwhile, the flashbacks take us to Russia where Oliver faces off against the Bratva. 4. Arrow: Superhero Flightclub 2.0 … only on the CW App (Date: 29 Sep 2016)
    * You gotta be in Ahmehhrica. Because Amerrhica… F Yeah.
    * the trailer not only features the titular characters from all four shows but members of their supporting casts as well, mixing the humor, action, and meta references galore that have become a trademark of The CW’s DC television brand.
    * banter between the likes of Cisco, Diggle, and Felicity is as welcome as ever – and Diggle’s reaction to the Martian Manhunter reveal is priceless, as poor Dig seems increasingly bewildered by the new wonders of the DCTVU.
    * Oh, and select members of the Legends crew are… there, too.

  5. Arrow: Villains revealed for the 4-Way Crossover Episode! (Date: 29 Sep 2016)
    *  The Dominators will be the “big bad” in the four-episode crossover event, The CW announced today.
    * Fans familiar with the aliens — towering, with bright yellow skin and giant teeth — may wonder just how many compromises producers will have to make to bring them to the screen in a way that looks good — but according to producers, the answer is none at all.
    * Marc Guggenheim: “This year, for our mega ‘Arrowverse’ crossover, we’re taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes,”
    * Marc Guggenheim: “We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”

  2. Legends: Holy Crap Obsidian confirmed as Green Lantern’s son (Date: 27 Sep 2016)
    *  In the comics, Todd (Obsidian) was abused by his adoptive parents, which made him unstable and not always the “good guy” in the early days. He also eventually came out of the closet, and — as mentioned — was the son of Green Lantern.  So how much of this could possibly have stuck around for TV?
*”It’s all in there. It’s all in there, every bit of it,” Lance Henriksen told ComicBook.com. “Yeah, being Green Lantern’s son and all that stuff and him being gay is all in there. It’s treated, honestly, kind of ungently.
