My fellow Midgardians, I bid thee a Happy Thorsday! Today marks the first entry of this feature on my column and I shall celebrate by showcasing seven Thor comic book covers which caught my eye.
1. First up in honor of the fourth of July tomorrow, here’s a cover featuring Thor and his fellow Avenger Captain America:
Titled Captain America & Thor Avengers!, the cover was done by artist Ron Lim and debuted in 2011. The 48-page book features two stories-one about Captain America and the other about Thor. I like this cover because it portrays our two heroes as their MCU versions. Both Cap and Thor look ready to do battle with the enemy. Have at thee!
2. The second cover is from J. Michael Straczynski’s run:
Illustrated by Marko Djurdjevic, Thor #602’s cover is awesome! A lot of times covers can give readers insight on what the story will be about. From the looks of it shit has gone down and Thor’s caught in the flames of chaos. Nicely done!
3. Number three on my list takes us back to the 80’s (1987 to be exact) and the Mighty Thor’s battling the Incredible Hulk!
Thor #385 was illustrated by artists Ron Frenz and Al Milgrom. I like the detail of the artwork and it’s pretty clear that Thor and Hulk are really into their battle.
4. Jack Kirby’s amazing talent shines through on this Thor cover:
In Thor #126, the god of thunder finds himself pitted against the Greek demigod Hercules. Who will win? You’ll have to read the issue to find out! Jack Kirby’s artwork speaks for itself. This is just one example in the thousands of examples of just how great of an artist he was.
5. We leave 1966 and arrive in 2012 where we find this powerful cover for our fifth entry:
Illustrated by Stephen Segovia, the #3 issue of the miniseries Thor: The Deviants Saga packs a powerful punch in the form of lighting. The cover shows the power of Thor as he puts the hammer down on his foe.
6. We leave that powerful cover to return back to the sixties (1969 exactly) where King Kirby reigned supreme in illustrating comic book covers:
Here we see Thor using his hammer again getting ready to throw it at an enemy or thing off cover. The detail in which Kirby puts into our hero, his hammer, the background, and Galactus is extraordinary.
7. Finally our last entry:
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Thor, this Mighty Thor #18 variant cover was illustrated by Steve Mcniven. I really like how the hammer bursts through the words and there’s a lot of detail in Thor’s outfit. The lighting and color of the piece is magnificent.
And there you have it people of Midgard. Let us give thanks for this blessed day and these wonderful pieces of art celebrating the mighty god of thunder. In closing, I leave you with the following panel from the first appearance of Thor courtesy of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee:
And don’t you forget it! Until next time!
