The consumer market research group the NPD Group has released its findings on video game sales in  2013 and the numbers are staggering. We spent a whopping $15.39 billion, with a B. The industry as a whole saw a 1% increase while the release of the Next-Gen systems helped pushed console sales up by 5%. Digital gaming, including everything from game downloads, to DLCs, add-ons, social networking games, and app-based mobile games had the biggest cumulative share with $7.22 billion.

XBox One beat out PS4 last year in America but Sony claims they hold the title for cumulative sales globally. CoD:Ghosts and Battlefield 4 are top dogs in software and AC:Black Flag was close behind. GTA 5 was the reigning champ as far as total software sales.

  5. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

The big number here is the amount of players over the age of 13 who purchased digital games and content. A whopping 36% of those players bought a DLC, add-on, or some other form of digital game. I’d wager that that number will greatly increase if not double next year. Especially since the second I insert a new game from the store I have 114 offers for DLCs, add-ons, character upgrades, etc, etc.

  1. Those numbers are just crazy. DLC is getting beyond ridiculous as companies no longer feel the need to release a fully polished game.
I’m wondering if I should be sad or proud that I didn’t play any of the games on those lists?
