Video Edition:
Starling Tribune – Season 4 Edition – Dark WatersThe Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network

A day after the Arrow season 4 mid-season finale the Starling Tribune reporters gather to marvel at the episode and the 1st half of the season. Reporter Neil unfortunately could not make it so fan of the podcast Jenny joins us to fill Neil’s seat. With less than a week before Star Wars Episode VII it is on everyone’s brain so the new podcast “squirrel” moment is “StarWars!” included with an Arrow reference to Star Wars as well. In the meat of the episode none of the reporters believe Felicity is dead but Jenny does have “Death fatigue” and SP comes out with his special theory. The possibility of Time Travel is discussed and everyone revised their grave-site death predictions. It’s a packed Arrow episode too with an Oliver-Felicity engagement and many secrets are revealed such as Damian’s family (we fear for Damian’s daughter), Quentin and Momma Smoak’s relationship. None of the reporters have a good handle on the Andy-John Diggle story line. The reporters love the dual father-daughter arcs in the episode. The reporters discuss how Oliver is handling both Team Arrow and Star City Mayoral Candidate. The reporters compare and contrast the villain evolution of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Grant Ward and Arrow’s Damian Darhk. “Genesis” continues to be a mystery. Lain-Yu Sharnadko 4 was quite the bust. The reporters comment on Malcom Merlyn as The Green Arrow. Chris answers the question of “Did Laurel redeem herself yet?” and all of the reporters give their take on a future Laurel-Oliver relationship. It’s not Arrow without some great fight scenes like we saw in the warehouse. SP continues his campaign for #AnnaHopkinsForCaptainMarvel and also his love for … shipwrecks? The reporters wrap up the episode with a list of Easter Eggs, Arrow News, a Stephen Amell versus Ben Affleck, Feedback and comments from the chat. Thank you for downloading and listening! All of us at Starling Tribune appreciate you! Happy Holidays and see you in 2016!

NK: Hint – it’s not the last issue in the run, so he may just survive… and get a new girlfriend. It’s a great issue following some hard-core combat in issue #46. Starling Tribune – Season 4 Edition – Legends Of Yesterday

The Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network

It’s a special edition of The Starling Tribune as the reporters discuss the Arrow and Flash crossover, Legends Of Today and Legends Of Yesterday. The GonnaGeek network steals a page from the CW network and does a crossover of our own as The Starling Tribune sends Reporter Neil this week to The Crimson Comet and Jonolobster from The Crimson Comet is welcomed to the reporter’s pool for the week. We love the Geek And Avengers references this week ala the superhero loft party and the farmhouse scenes. They three reporters talk about how great these episodes are for new viewers to start on, why the Arrow Lair’s computers have been acting all weird, and how some characters and secondary characters were not given their full due. What an awesome complete death scene! The reporters give their take on Big Boss fight scene #1 and Bg Boss fight scene #2. Damian Darhk and Vandal Savage see a speedster for the first time. The reporters have a theory on Vandal Savage and the League Of Assassins. The reporters are wowed by Felicity’s tech-fu being able to play a BetaMax on a dime using modern equipment. Even while he is on the road for the week, Neil reports remotely from Central City. Going deeper into the episode, the reporters discuss is Felicity is acting out of character and if Samatha Clayton is asking too much of Oliver. Those issues bother’s Stargate Pioneer so much he reached out to Anna Hopkins to get her take on what happened in the episode. (#AnnaHopkinsForCaptainMarvel) The reporters salivate over the meta-ness of Oliver Queen playing with William’s Green Arrow action figure in the future! Isn’t it silly that Hawkman and Hawkgirl’s outfits always fit? There’s always a cost to magic and time travel. The reporters give their answers to who will win in a cage match: Zoom, Savage or Darhk. The reporters tell which trailer they are more excited over: Legends Of Tomorrow Trailer or The Batman v Superman Trailer. And finally the reporters close off this special episode by going over some Easter Eggs, taking some feedback and reviewing the new in Arrow related news.

Starling Tribune – Season 4 Edition – Brotherhood

The Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network

As we close in on the first big crossover event with Flash this year, Chris, Neil, and Stargate Pioneer recap episode 7 of this 4th season of Arrow. This episode, Brotherhood, features the return of Diggle’s long lost brother with ramifications that could shake up Team Arrow. Neil geeks out over James “Bam-Bam” Bamford’s episode direction, his FIRST time behind the camera as director. Did Bam-Bam’s direction live up to all our hype over this occurrence? And what about those fights like: The Arrow-Elevator Fight, The Arrow-Hallway Fight, The Courtyard Fight At the Crazy Factory, The Shipping Container Dock fight, The Speedy Bar Fight, And the Armored Car Fight. Chris actually flippy-flops this episode and calls out Laurel as having a decent episode which surprises everyone that Chris mentions it. Just how does Laurel change into her Canary costume on her way home from work? SP brings a new theory for Oliver’s campaign manager as does Neil and Chris bringing a total of four separate theories on just who he is. Did Thea just find her ticket out of her bloodlust? If she did will it work for Sara as well? John’s brother Andy is back!!! But is it really all-Andy? And what is Andy’s true past overseas? Who will Damian bring in as Oliver’s Mayoral opponent? And what is G6:5 and what are the yellow pills? We speculate on the potential that Damian has an informant inside the League Of Assassins. And last but not least is the return of the Iron A.T.O.M. suit. Yup, that’s right. Iron A.T.O.M.. That is the official name for the man in the suit in this show.

The Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network

Chris, Neil, and Stargate Pioneer are back to recap episode 6 of this 4th season of Arrow.  Sara might be losing it, but all is not lost as Team Arrow is able to rescue the long missing Ray Palmer aka The Atom.  With all that drama don’t forget that Mama Smoak is back and setting her eye on certain police Captain.  Curtis Holt joins Team Arrow in the field for some action. Our Starling Tribune Team asks the listener for your take on the Campaign Manager’s nickname – we need you to Cisco it for us. He might be a son of a DC character we may have already run into in Arrow too! The trio run down a couple of possibilities. None of us – SP especially – would push Felicity out of our labs for not showering. The hosts love Diggle’s Code Name Spartan. There’s a lot of moving piece this week, but don’t worry The Starling Tribune has you covered. We also go over episode DC Comics Easter Eggs, run down the weekly Arrow and DC news, point at the Arrow-verse mentions over in The Flash and cover all the great listener feedback we’ve received.

Starling Tribune – Season 4 Edition – HauntedThe Official Arrow Podcast of the Gonna Geek Network

It seems everyone wanted to watch Matt Ryan back as John Constantine as Arrow received such a significant bump in the ratings this week despite leaking online. Neil, SP and Chris did too and they are back again to geek out over the episode. They talk about how the show might change now that magic has been introduced to the Star City Team Arrow and applaud Matt Ryan’s NBC dig with the dead peacock feather. Is Oliver Queen really Pure Of Heart? Neil suggests that he is really has Purity Of Purpose instead. But that tattoo has everyone wondering how and when it will work this year. Just how dense is Baron Reiter? Apparently very. And Neil strikes again with mention of the Outsiders War and the Island of Lian Yu becoming a character of its own again this season.  The three speculate on how Damian Darhk has infiltrated Team Arrow through his election headquarters. Is Andy Diggle’s background believable? Is Andy’s background any more believable than supporting Laurel anymore? Even the staunchest defender of the original content is starting to have a hard time supporter anymore. Thea is no longer supporting herself it seems and our heart goes out to the two ladies that are suffering from blood lusts anymore. Apparently the key to winning an Olympic bronze metal is talent, training, desire, and a case of energy drinks. Does the Arrow garage mean that we will get Arrow vehicles now? As always the hosts go over Arrow news and listener feedback.

Wednesday’s Webcomic: Battlepug

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Sometimes a webcomic is born from a strange place. In this case, an established mainstream print comic artist designed a t-shirt on the fly. The characters on the silly t-shirt became so wildly popular that a weekly webcomic had to follow, because the clamors of internet could not be denied. I mean really, who could deny the sweet, gigantic face of BattlepugThe Battlepug itself is the giant, fearsome mount of mighty barbarian mage-warrior, who is on quest for vengeance against those who destroyed his family. In an age lost to time, where bandits roam and kings squabble over petty grievances, a malevolent wizard is using giant, adorable beasts to destroy a seemingly random sequence of towns and villages. Our hero, the Warrior, is the lone survivor of one of these attacks. As he journeys to find vengeance against the mage he is joined on his quest by the massive and lovable Battlepug, a mad old hermit, a foul-mouthed and powerfully magical child, and a fearsome female soldier.

Battlbug is a tongue-in-cheek look at the pulp novels of the past, and the characters almost always approach their absurd situations with complete seriousness. This is a sword and sorcery comedy, although there are hints of a more serious storyline beneath it. The art is reminiscent of pulp novel covers and illustrations as well. It is brightly colored and richly detailed. THe characters are expressive and original, and every single one of the massive Battlepug’s sweet, derpy expressions warm my heart and make me squee! Even if he is rampaging through a battle! Who can say no reading more comics with that face? As an added bonus, fan’s pug pictures are featured on Fridays! The comic itself updates with excellent punctuality on Mondays. In 2012, it won the Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic. The first volume has been published by Dark Horse.

The Author and his Other Work

Mike Norton is the writer and artist for Battlepug, and is the owner of a pug named Ninja. He has an impressive comics resume that includes the Waiting Place, Runaways, and Green Arrow/Black Canary as well as many others. He has also recently been working on Revival with Tim Seeley, to much critical acclaim. The colors are done by Allen Passalaqua, a photographer and colorist who has worked on Justice Socitey of America, Spiderman, Green Arrow and Black Canary.

A Boy and his Dog.

Our hero meets his mighty steed.

Wednesday’s Webcomic – Gunnerkrigg Court

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Gunnerkigg Court is the long-running story of a young woman and her close friends discovering their boarding school is much, much more than it seems. Quiet, polite Antimony Carver begins her first-year studies at the eponymous court and begins to notice the strange goings on and begins to investigate despite the obstacle of the tight-lipped faculty. Though she is very reserved, a gregarious and clever girl named Katerina Donlan, the daughter of two faculty members, manages to befriend her and the two of them slowly manage to unravel the tangle of myths, legends, alchemy and mad science that have built Gunnerkrigg Court. Their own unique talents and those of their classmates and teachers are slowly revealed to be tied into the broader story, as well as the ancient gods and monsters that make appearances.

Our Heroine Appears, with 2 Shadows

The stories are episodic and come to a conclusion at the end of every chapter, but all are tied into the larger, broader mystery of the origins of Gunnerkrigg Court and its neighboring forest. Some chapters are very dark and tragic, though with positive endings and thankfully there are frequent comedic chapters to balance the mood. The art quality evolves quickly and keeps a consistent style and the characters age and evolve naturally, with sumptuous rich colors and intricate detail that shows all of the author’s attention to his historical and anthropological research. The mythologies of many cultures as well as the history of science are among many of the unique things a reader may learn after researching something that pops up in the story either in the background or mentioned directly. The characters are deep and flawed, all of them acting like the children they are and growing realistically while learning about life, love, and their own natural gifts. Gunnerkrigg updates three times a week without fail, as the author keeps himself at a 30 page buffer ahead of the projected publishing date.

The Author

Tom Siddell is very private, and does not reveal much about his personal life. He prefers to only discuss the comic and the world he has built. He has revealed that he lives in Birmingham, England and that he was a graphic artist at a video game company. He recently began to devote himself to Gunnerkrigg Court full time. Many pages have an amusing comment about the page at the bottom, which I recommend reviewing, and his tumblr features many bits of fan art he’s drawn for other properties and Gunnerkrigg Court related news as well as spiders. The Gunnerkrigg Court graphic novels are published by Archaia Entertainment and lots of high quality merchandise and prints have recently appeared at Topatoco.
