Blake J. Harris, the best-selling author of “Console Wars,” has turned his attention to virtual reality with a new book. In “The History of the Future: Oculus, Facebook, and the Revolution That Swept Virtual Reality” Harris dives into the dramatic, larger-than-life true story behind the founding of Oculus and its quest for virtual reality. In this podcast, he discusses how he got his hands on the story, the twists and turns he encountered, and what’s next for virtual reality. (more…)
You know who directed your favorite films and wrote your favorite screenplays… so why don’t you know the names behind your favorite video games? On this episode, host Cody Gough interviews Patrick Hickey, Jr, author of “The Minds Behind the Games: Interviews With Cult and Classic Video Game Developers,” about his conversations with the creators of games like NBA Jam, Night Trap, Maniac Mansion, and more. (more…)
Cody and his girlfriend Casey discuss the current production of Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 at Goodman Theatre, which they had the opportunity to see over the weekend. They also finished watching Twin Peaks (its initial 2-season run, not including the upcoming Showtime episodes), and have a lot to say about its final episodes.
Cody and Jon discuss Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Then, Jon has figured out a legendary way to strike a balance between games and life, and Cody doesn’t understand how to podcast anymore but he DOES like reading books.
And welcome back to my column! With Star Wars fever at an all time high, I’m starting the new year off by taking a look at some awesome Star Wars books. These books are either from the official cannon, the expanded universe, and beyond. Today’s book is an short story ebook titled Star Wars: The Perfect Weapon.
Written by Delilah S. Dawson, the 52 page story focuses on a character featured in the Force Awakens, Bazine Netal, who viewers briefly saw in Maz Kanata’s castle.
The short story gives readers backstory on what Bazine was up to before the events in the Force Awakens. Bazine is a mercenary, highly skilled at being a master of disguise, and armed with a blade, a blaster, or her bare hands. The story is well paced and goes deeper into who Bazine is and what her motivations are.
It’s been a long while since I’ve written (life got in the way) but this black nerd lady has returned with her musings. I’m going to try and attempt to post here on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is part of my writing new years resolution so bare with me as I try to do my best to not break it. No let’s get on with it shall we?
In nerd/geekdom, 2015 ended with the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and there’s been many articles, gifs, fan art, etc. to celebrate and discuss the film. I’ve only seen the film once so far (I know what’s wrong with me?) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. To celebrate, I would like to feature Star Wars books that I find intriguing-I mean just plain awesome. These books come from the now official cannon, the expanded universe, and beyond.
The first book I’m featuring is titled Star Wars: The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections. Written by Jason Fy, the book was released on the day that the film arrived in theaters. Inside readers will discover the juicy details of the vehicles and spaceships featured in the film. The book contains a total of 12 profiles each explaining the backstory of its subject.
Here are few pictures of what you’ll find in the book:
Pretty awesome right? The price is also awesome as the book costs $12.58 on Amazon. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely purchasing a copy. Well that’s it for now, I’ll catch ya’ll on the flip side!
Catch up with Cody and Jon as they talk life milestones, Devil in the White City, Hearthstone, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD.
Jon Reviews Rocket League and Dying Light, and Cody reviews Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Plus: Jon gives thoughts on the science-fiction short story Flowers for Algernon, and Cody raves and rants about a couple sci-fi movies—both good and bad.
I originally wrote this for my personal blogsite, but I thought it would be a great piece for my column so enjoy!
May 4th is quickly approaching and that means Star Wars Day will be upon us! In honor of this special day where we take time to celebrate a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I have created a list of 8 things you can do to have fun on Star Wars Day.
1. Get into the mood andwear Star Wars Apparel
I’m Ms. Darth Vader
There are many clothing and accessories dedicated to the Star Wars franchise. For instance these cool dresses from Her Universe which can also be found at Hot Topic.
All six seasons of the awesome show are now streaming on Netflix. I wrote two articles (which I’ll post on here soon) about the series that you’ll definitely want to read.
3. Read a Star Wars Book, Comic, or both!
With the announcement of the expanded universe no longer being canon, fans can take heart that the many books and comics occurring in between the films and after will still be available in print form.
4. Check out the Rebel Alliance, 501st, and R2 Builders in your area and join!
Each of these groups are made up of volunteers who enjoy the franchise and they convene at events, cons, and comic book shops that ask them to attend. Many of these folks are friendly and helpful so go and say hello.
My sis (in the red) and other members of the 501st Tampa Bay Squad.
5. Watch the movies
This is just a no brainier. P.S. I would watch episodes 4-6 first (or just watch them and pretend that the first three didn’t happened LOL). And remember Han Solo fired first!
6. Watch Star Wars related documentaries, fan films, and YouTube parodies.
There are two Star Wars documentaries that I know of (if you know more list them in the comment section) and both I believe are still streaming on Netflix. They are:
In addition there are fan films and YouTube parodies which you can enjoy. Here are few of my favorites:
It’s always fun to make things and it’s even more fun to make Star Wars related crafts. You can visit StarWars.com to get ideas. Also Bonnie Burton has written a Star Wars Craft Book which has a lot of great ideas.
And that my friends is my list. I hope you have a wonderful day. May the Fourth Be With You!
