Turok 2 Seeds of Evil with Billy (CommanderCast)

Facebooktwitterredditmail

You know what’s always fun? Dinosaurs. Seriously, who doesn’t like dinosaurs? Crazy people, that’s who. So if you can get dinosaurs and aliens and giant guns and it all actually makes sense? How cool is that?

Listen in as Billy who sometimes writes for Commander Cast comes to talk about Turok 2 Seeds of Evil. And cool guns. And the fun of having a comic property published across about a gazillion different publishers.

Learn such things as:

  • What did Billy admit to doing that’s probably going to get him in trouble?
  • What do you name a dinosaur if you don’t have a word for dinosaur?
  • Would a bow and arrow really work all that well against a dinosaur?
  • And so much more!

A big thanks to Dani and Brett from The Wheel Weaves, as well as everyone from The Compleat Discography for the promos today.

Music by Best Day, who did a thing but I already forgot what it was and it probably wasn’t really that cool anyway.

Legends Podcast #454; Disney Minus: The Black Cauldron (Canuary)

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Last year, films produced or owned by Walt Disney Studios accounted for a whopping 80% of box office returns. In fact, looking at the 2019 Top Ten, you’d have to go down to 9th place to find a movie that wasn’t produced or co-produced by Disney, or its Marvel, Pixar, and LucasFilm subsidiaries. While Disney has always been a force at the box office, it has not always produced winners. The House of Mouse has plenty of skeletons in its closet, from unloved sequels, franchise non-starters, and plain ol’ flops. This is Canuary 2020: Disney Minus!

Disney’s signature product, since the very beginning, has been the animated feature film. With early classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 and the mega-hits of the ‘90s like Aladdin and The Lion King, Disney proved that it can outdraw the competition. But things weren’t always great in the Magic Kingdom, with a fairly lengthy dry spell in the ‘70s and ‘80s that many refer to as the Dark Ages. In 1985, Disney Animation saw its biggest flop yet, a fantasy movie based on The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander, which, with a budget of around $40 million, was the most expensive animated film made to date. It only grossed $21 million and nearly shut down Disney’s animation studios for good. And though the critics liked it and it was the first animated film to use computer-generated imagery, the movie was not released on home video until 1998. Now Legends Podcast kicks off our month of crappy movies by taking a dump in The Black Cauldron!

As will become tradition here, the last episode of the year is a giant thank you to people who need to hear it. I certainly don’t mention everyone who deserves to be talked about, but I try.

People Mentioned in this Episode

We’ve made it through another year of being excellent to each other. But you still get homework again this year.

Your Podcast Homework

  1. Let the people who have had this kind of impact on your life know that you appreciate them
  2. Find a way to do that same thing for someone else

Music, as always, by Best Day, who won’t get mentioned here until he lets me know that he’s seen all the things I say about him in the show notes.

Legends Podcast #452; Galaxy Quest (Legends of ‘99)

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Legends Podcast has celebrated the Legends of ‘99 all year long, and now we’re wrapping up with our most favorite films of the year.

Finally, Lobster brings our celebration of ‘99 to its natural conclusion. There were many fine films of 1999, but the years have dimmed the luster of some of the year’s top contenders. And though many films of ‘99 are still beloved by audiences, very few have seen their legend grow over the two decades since their release the way this film’s legend has. There were many fine films of 1999, but none finer than Galaxy Quest. Released on Christmas Day, the film, which came out of a troubled production for DreamWorks Studios, flew under box office radar, but earned praise from critics and audiences alike, and secured an enduring legacy as what George Takei called “a chillingly realistic documentary.” Now, MovieDude Eric joins Beef, Wing, and Lobster to take on the final Legend of ‘99. Never give up, never surrender!
