People of Midgard the time has come once again to celebrate our beloved god-soon to be goddess-of thunder! Last time I spoke tales of the many who have been found worthy by Mjolnir. This time I speak of the foes of Thor. These are the nefarious beings and creatures which the mighty Thor has defeated time and time again throughout the ages. Today we shall learn of some of Thor’s most memorable villains. Shall we begin?
1. Loki
The black sheep of the house of Odin and an enormous thorn in our hero’s side. As he and Thor grew up together, Loki was always resentful in the differences between him and Thor. It also didn’t help that the citizens of Asgard mistreated Loki because he was different.
Soon labeled the “god of mischief” Loki and he fully embraced it. His mischievous ways soon turned down a darker path and he got a new title, the “god of evil”. Numerous times, Loki has done something in an attempt to cause harm to his brother.
From bringing about Ragnarok to his part in literally bringing down Asgard from the heavens during the Siege storyline, Loki has done a lot of harm. However there have been a few times when his schemes brought about something good. He inadvertently helped form the Avengers, he defeated the Void at the cost of his life and when he was reincarnated and brought back as a boy, he attempted to use his mischievous ways for good.
Currently, he is an Agent of Asgard, conducting secret missions for the All-Mother the leaders of the new Asgardia home of the gods and former citizens of Asgard. Whether or not he’s a force for good or evil has yet to be determined…
2. Hela
She is the daughter of Loki (this may have changed due to kid Loki’s adventures during Kieron Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery run) and the Asgardian goddess of death and ruler of the realms of Hel and Niffleheim. She’s also a frequent powerful foe of Thor and has a liking for his soul which she has gotten a couple of times-having slew Thor-only for it to be taken from her when he’s been restored to life.
3. Enchantress & The Executioner
A former lover and constant foe, Amora aka the Enchantress has caused lots of trouble for Thor throughout the ages, but she’s also has been a help to the god of thunder on one or more occasions by saving his life. Sometimes she was accompanied by her minion Skurge the Executioner.
Wielding a magic double-bladed battle axe, this Asgardian was Enchantress’s muscle. He did her and Loki’s bidding and was a long-time foe of Thor. Both he and Amora were members of the original Masters of Evil (who were foes of the Avengers). Eventually, Skurge fell in love with his boss who did not reciprocate. Heartbroken he joined Thor and his comrades on a mission to Hel where saved the day by destroying Naglfar the ship of the dead with his axe as well as delaying Ragnarok. He also gave his life so the heroes could escape Hel. After a stint in Hel, Skruge finally joined the honored dead in Vallhalla.
4. Surtur
This giant fire demon from the extra dimensional plane of Muspelheim (land of the fire demons) is an enemy of Odin and Thor. Numerous times has he tried to invade Asgard and each time he’s been defeated by Thor and his allies.
5. Karnilla
If you ever visit the Asgardian province of Nornheim, you will definitely hear of the sorceress and Norn Queen Karnilla. Over the years she’s been an enemy of our realm allying herself with Loki from time to time. She’s deeply in love with Thor’s brother Balder the Brave and has saved him many times.
But don’t let that deceive you, she’s still a villain and a good one at that. Her most recent evil deed was to prepare an attack on Asgard following the events of Fear Itself. Thor had been killed by his uncle the Serpent aka God of Fear and she replaced him with a new thunder god called Taranus. Except for Loki-who saves the day-everyone’s memories had been altered so they only remember Taranus instead of Thor.
6. The Wrecking Crew
Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball, and the Wrecker are the four villians known as the Wrecking Crew. The crew received their powers by grabbing a hold of the Wrecker’s crowbar at the same time-which had been enchanted in addition to the Wrecker himself accidently by the Norn Queen- during a lightning storm. They are a force to be reckoned with as they nearly beat the demigod Hercules an ally of Thor to death in the past.
These fiends might be powerful but our Mighty Thor has always prevailed! Stayed tuned for part two of Adversaries until next time, for Asgard!
