        • Few have dominated children’s programming during the past 25 years as much as Margaret Loesch, who, as an executive with ABC, NBC, Hanna-Barbera, Marvel Productions and, finally, as founding president of the Fox Children’s Network, has developed and/or supervised more than 100 live-action and animated series and specials. In July 1997, Loesch was appointed vice chair of Fox Kids Worldwide, to be in charge of the Fox Kids Network, Saban Entertainment and International Family Entertainment, acquired by News Corporation earlier in the year. Loesch was given the responsibility of developing long-term strategy and opportunities for Fox Kids Worldwide.
        • Prior to the new appointment, Loesch was responsible not just for the Fox Network–which was the highest-rated children’s programming block in broadcasting–but also for the Fox Kids Club, the Fox magazines for kids and the weekly radio program, Fox Kids Countdown. She began her career in TV at ABC in 1971, working her way up through a succession of program-related positions until 1974, when she bolted to NBC to supervise the Saturday morning line-up of children’s programming. Loesch left NBC to join Hanna-Barbera as vice president of children’s programming in 1979 where she took hold of a property called “The Smurfs,” that would become the hottest kids ticket of the early 80s and put NBC in the Saturday morning driver’s seat. In 1984, she accepted the position of president and CEO of Marvel Productions, where she was responsible for the execution of such programs as “Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies,” “Dungeons and Dragons,” “GI Joe” and “Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock” and shared in four Emmy awards for her efforts.
        • It was a surprise to few in the animation and kids programming world when Loesch was named by Fox to create a network for the ages 2-12 demographic in 1990. She developed the Fox Network as a service for the affiliates providing both weekday and Saturday morning programming. Among the efforts was the “Batman” animated franchise. Loesch has also expanded the Fox Network to Latin America and Australia.
        • Following the merger of Fox Kids Network with Saban in November 1997, Loesch resigned her post. In February 1998, it was announced that she had accepted the position of president of the newly created Jim Henson TV Group, with responsibilities to head worldwide TV operations and with the mandate to create a new general entertainment cable channel. Soon after the network relaunch under the name Hallmark Channel, Loesch resigned because she “achieved all of my goals, and now I’m exhausted” and she hoped to spend more time with her family.

        • TV executive Margaret Loesch had long championed the idea that there was TV gold to be made with Marvel, and she’d spent years pitching shows to the networks. Loesch was particularly taken with the X-Men, the ragtag team of mutants led by Prof. Charles Xavier, who taught them to deal with their mutant powers, all the while protecting a public who feared and even hated them. She oversaw a failed pilot, 1989’s Pryde of the X-Men, (featuring, of all things, a Wolverine with an Australian accent) and vowed not to make the same mistakes again. When Loesch started her role as Fox Kids CEO in 1990, she convinced Fox head Jamie Kellner to let her greenlight an X-Men show, staking her career on its success. Marvel’s Eternals Tops Just One Other MCU Film as Domestic Box Office Run Ends

Released amid a global pandemic after multiple delays, Eternals’ domestic box office take comes in second-to-last of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, sandwiched between two Phase One films.

 

Finishing ahead of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk but falling behind 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger in a report from The Numbers, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals finished its domestic run with $164.87 million at the domestic box office. The second film in the MCU’s Phase One, Incredible Hulk managed $134.81 million, while the fifth entry, First Avenger, pulled in $176.65 million. For reference, Avengers: Endgame currently holds the top domestic revenue spot with $858.37 million.

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Scarlett Johansson received a massive second payout as a result of the release restructuring caused by the pandemic.

 

According to Puck, Johansson was one of several actors who were handed “mid seven-figure checks” by NBC Universal as a buyout of their box office bonuses. NBC Universal had opted to make films available for streaming 17 days after release in theaters as a compromise during the pandemic. The same was given to Johansson’s co-stars, Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. The exact figure is unknown. It’s worth noting that Universal’s deal with theaters allowed for release on streaming services for films that opened to less than $50 million. Meaning the buyout was arguably unnecessary.

Production on the second season of Marvel Studios’ Loki series is reported to begin this summer at Pinewood Studios, and it appears one of the first seasons’ biggest stars will be there when it happens. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the British actress who played TVA judge and series antagonist Ravonna Renslayer, has confirmed that she will indeed be returning for the show’s next batch of episodes. During an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, Mbatha-Raw was asked about her involvement with the future of the Disney+ exclusive. Her response, accompanied by a huge smile, was short and straightforward: “I know there is a season two… I know that I’m in it…and that’s about all I can say!”
