The best thing I read last week was Pretty Deadly #1 by Image comics. Very simply as good a first issue as American Vampire if not better.
This first issue of Pretty Deadly presents you with an introduction to a world like dipping a toe in a pond. It entices. It creates ripples, and then you realize all the ripples weren’t made by you. There’s danger in that pond, leeches, piranha, deadly poisonous things. But you want to go in, to give in. It may be dangerous but as the temperature rises and the cool water calls, you know eventually you are going for a dip. One issue in and this book has me along for the long haul.
The powerhouse creators Kelly Sue DeConnick(words) and Emma Rios(art) are joined with the beautiful color palette of the spectacular Jordie Bellaire with letters by the one little touch of testosterone in the group Clayton Cowles. Cover to cover this book is as intriguing as it is beautiful. Stark powerful line work and flashes of color combinations get your eyes to bounce around the art work even as you follow along with the crazy story of Death in love and the results found thereafter.
Everyone needs to give at least this first issue a chance. I’m certain there won’t be any regrets. Now let’s go take a dip in that pond.
