The best thing I saw last week was Almost Human the new show that premiered last night on FOX. It’s a sci-fi procedural with all the good parts of Robocop without the crazy and a touch of the new DREDD without all the depressing scorched earth downside.
Taking a small step into the future Almost Human is designed to present the audience with tech that’s more around the corner than from the far flung future. The tech appears to be fairly integral to how the show will proceed with presenting problems and unique crime scenarios caused or aided by advanced tech. So the next time you iPad is acting up just remember it could be worse, an MX could be ratting you out to your boss.
The interaction between Karl Urban and Michael Ealy hits a couple of standard sci-fi story tropes but they pull it off in a way that doesn’t feel forced and surprisingly comes across as natural interaction which is a huge accomplishment for a damaged cop and a questionable synthetic. Urban, the new DREDD and Bones for the new Star Trek films, may be one of my favorite actors of his generation, he always seems to embody whatever role he is in and delivers the goods. Urban’s performance is John Kennex hits all the right spots and makes you like him as the hero of the story even when he’s being not so respectable. Ealy who some might know from Sleeper Cell but I always remember from the entertaining Barbershop films has his hands full with his Dorian character that has to gain the trust of his new partner as he travels along the well worn path that Data and a few other artificial characters have followed over the years. I think Dorian’s journey is going to be an interesting and entertaining one, I can’t wait to see where it goes. Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook, and Minka Kelly are three other good reasons to watch the show. They all put in good performances and I have my fingers crossed that they will all be on as series regulars.
Simply put Almost Human is a well written show with amazing special effects and some damn fine acting. The 2nd night of the two night premiere will be on FOX prime time tonight in its normal Monday evening time slot and I believe you should be able to re-watch the first episode, give the first 2 episodes a chance. It may not be your cup of tea or it might, but we all know if a great sci-fi show is going to have a chance to survive on FOX it needs numbers even more than it needs fans. Go give it a try, you might find the future doesn’t look that dark after all.
I am so in love with this show, and the second night of the premier cemented it into a regular for my weekly dvr. My biggest fear i do not want this to go the way of I-robot.
Agreed, this show has jumped to the top of my weekly must watch list. The 2nd episode tonight went a long way into showing how much heart this show can have without being sappy or trite. My biggest fear is that this show will got he way of Firefly. So we need to watch it every week and spread the word!
