Johnny Cab: Hello I’m Johnny Cab, where can I take you tonight?
Doug Quaid: Drive, drive!
Johnny Cab: Would you please repeat the destination?
Doug Quaid: Anywhere, just go, GO!
Doug Quaid: SHIT, SHIT!
Johnny Cab: I’m not familiar with that address, would you please repeat the destination?

Its a familiar scene from Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger, you get into a car and it drives you to your destination with little more than an address. Cars that have been able to drive themselves have long been used in science fiction and spy movies, and soon yours will be able to as well.
Thanks to Nissan the the driverless car may soon be a reality. The Japanese automaker is setting its sights on having a fully automated car on the road by 2020. Nissan, by the end of the fiscal year of 2014, plans to have a course setup for testing in Tokyo for the different types of automated driving it is pursuing. Shareholders of Nissan were able to get their first look at the developments at the Nissan’s 360 convention held this past weekend in Irvine, Ca. They are incorporating technology that is readily available in today’s world with new inventions from work groups formed at universities such as MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Carnegie Mellon and the University of Tokyo. Nissan’s goal? to make a zero emissions zero fatality automobile. “Nissan’s autonomous driving technology is an extension of its Safety Shield, which monitors a 360-degree view around a vehicle for risks, offers warnings to the driver and takes action if necessary. It is based on the philosophy that everything required should be on board the vehicle, rather than relying on detailed external data,” according to the press release.
Toyota, Audi and google have also created prototypes for the driverless vehicles.
