Happy Taco Tuesday folks! Hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend. Mine was somewhat stressful as my mom was in the hospital. Thankfully all went well and she’s back at home recuperating. That also means that I didn’t get to watch Sailor Moon Crystal until Sunday and there won’t be a Sailor Moon Revisited entry until next week, so a thousand apologies in advance. In any case I have a recap of this show so let’s hop to it!
The show has an updated look and style, there’s a new theme song for both the opening and closing credits and they are pretty awesome! As I’ve said previously, this new incarnation of Sailor Moon is sticking closer to the manga and I have to say from what I’ve seen so far that is a good thing. If you compare the original first episode with this one you can see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same. A few things which stayed the same are the characters and the premise of the story.
One of the differences is the pacing, there’s going to be 26 episodes for the first season which means overall this series is definitely going to be shorter than its 200 episode predecessor. There’s less filler and the story gets to the point which I found to be both a negative and a positive, but doesn’t take away from the story in a major way. Basically, we get what we got in the original episode one. We meet Usagi who’s still a crybaby and klutz. We also meet her family and her classmates and the mysterious stranger wearing a tuxedo (in the afternoon of all times!). Without spoiling the episode for you, I’ll give you something that I liked and something I didn’t. I didn’t like the design of the monster, but I was excited to see that the end of the episode pays the way for the introduction of a new character that in the original series we had to wait a couple of episodes to get to.
Overall, I have to say that I truly enjoyed this episode and I loved the changes so far. I give the first episode a 4/5. Sailor Moon Crystal is airing currently in Japan with two episodes coming each month. The show is also streaming for free on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Neon Alley. You can also watch the first episode here. And here’s the trailer for episode two:
