IMAGE announces LCSD exclusive SAGA Lying Cat statue

November 19th is LOCAL COMIC SHOP DAY, and publishers have been offering all sorts of exclusive books, covers, and goodies to help honor the brick and mortar tradition that is the LCS (Local Comic Shop). Today, IMAGE COMICS and SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT have dropped a doozie…an exclusive LYING CAT statue!

I probably can’t afford it, and I’m OK with that.

Image Comics/Skybound is pleased to reveal an exclusive SAGA statue of the fan-favorite character Lying Cat in celebration of this year’s Local Comic Shop Day.

This exquisitely detailed, limited edition, black-and-white Lying Cat will be an eight inch resin statue, hand numbered, and limited to 300 pieces worldwide.

The LCSD Lying Cat statue (Diamond Code AUG168737) will be available onSaturday, November 19th at participating comic book retailers. The final order cutoff deadline is Monday, September 26th.

About Local Comic Shop Day:
Local Comic Shop Day® will be held on November 19, 2016 this year.

For 2016, the date has been changed to the Saturday before Small Business Saturday. “We polled participating retailers if they preferred to have Local Comic Shop Day® onNovember 19th or November 26th,” said ComicsPRO President Peter Dolan (Main Street Comics, Middletown NY). “By a margin of 73% to 27%, our retailers wanted to change the date to the earlier Saturday so it would have a distinct identity separate from Small Business Saturday.”

Local Comic Shop Day® is the only Comic Book Industry event created and run by retailers for retailers. “Last year nearly 400 storefronts participated in Local Comic Shop Day®,” said ComicsPRO Executive Director Marco Davanzo (Alakazam Comics, Irvine CA). “Each and every one of these retailers has a voice in how we grow the day—that’s why we polled them and will continue to ask their opinions as we go forward.”

Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. #51 The Things We Bury

The @LegendsOfShield (Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Agents Lauren, Haley and Stargate Pioneer break down the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode The The Things We Bury! They also run down the week in Marvel news, and run down all the awesome Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. feedback.

The hosts discuss Funko POP figures and what everyone has. Haley has Flash, Lauren has Winter Soldier, Rocket Racoon and Arya Stark, Nightwing has Robin and Nightwing but Stargate Pioneer doesn’t have any of them — YET.

The hosts discuss their desires again on an evil or good Fitz and the possibilities of a brainwashed Simons.

Stargate Pioneer can’t pronounce Paul Atreides which leads the foursome down a short discussion on various Dune screen versions including the original David Lynch version. And also if one should watch the David Lynch Dune or read the Comic Saga. The answer is simple:Saga always comes first!

“Black Adam” called in with his desired roster of an all-female Avenger team:

  1. Black Widow
  2. Captain Marvel
  3. Spider Woman
  4. Invisible Woman (Science)
  5. She-Hulk (Muscle)
  6. Valkyrie (Muscle)
  7. Agent Melinda May as S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison

Lauren is really liking breaking out the team in skill sets instead of replacements of the current Cinematic Universe Avengers team.

X-Men 3 continues not to exist for the hosts.

Nightwing decides to give HIS all-female Avengers team.

  1. Dagger
  2. Red She-Hulk
  3. Dazzler
  4. Big Bertha
  5. Firebird
  6. Polaris
  7. X-23

Lauren amends her list from podcast #44

  1. Black Widow
  2. Rescue
  3. She-Hulk
  4. Mockingbird
  5. Agent 13
  6. Carol Danvers

  1. Haley – Scarlet Witch

to include:

  1. Molly Hayes
  2. Nico Minoru

We all hear why Wing is wrong again because he didn’t care for Big Hero 6. So French of him. No one was surprised.

Later, Wing did mention that Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier was the best Marvel movie. Haley mentioned that was one opinion she could respect. But don’t get too excited. There are other opinions Wing has like on The incredible Hulk that Haley just wished Wing would stop drinking the cough syrup over.

Lauren tells us that Good Bye Lenin 2003 is a really good movie (That Haley hasn’t seen yet of course). And Daniel Bruhl who will be in Captain America Civil War was in Good Bye Lenin.

Lauren regales us about her amazing Marvel knowledge of Ragnarok – clone or no clone – and Eson The Searcher. And we collectively wonder exactly where Odin is right now within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

StarPi is completely deflated that he wasn’t voted sexiest man alive and Chris Hemsworth got it instead. But all the GonnaGeek women hosts including Lauren, Haley and Katherine from Legends Podcast are really fine with it.

Haley watches The Chris Pratt Guardians Of The Galaxy Dance Off Gag Reel video live on the podcast and describes the awesomeness as it happens.

We learn that Wing loves to say his H’es when he describes an actress as “hot.”

The Things We Bury Episode Discussion [41:15]

StarPi believes that Ward’s character’s arc of killing his brother and parents were known from the beginning of the series.

The best scene in the episode was definitely when all the evil characters (Ward, The Doctor, and Whitehall) are looking each other in the eye at the end to plan each other’s demise.

We (all of the hosts on Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will be calling Skye’s mom Sierra from Dollhouse until we hear her real name in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The scene with Skype’s Mom (Sierra) being operated on by Whitehall and then dumped in a ditch was very very dark. We don’t generally expect this level of darkness from Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D..

In a classic StarPi move he manages to confuse Edwards James Olmos with James Earl Jones in name only. And in another classic Haley move she admits to not ever having watched Hunt For Red October. Or any of the Tom Clancy movies really.

Lauren states that “Fricking Robert Redford ruins everything!”

Wing brings up a great theory about an infinity stone within Attilan and Lauren likes the idea because it would reward the Marvel fan for watching the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show in addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Don’t forget that Simmons has definitely been made to “comply” by Whitehall.

Has Marvel rolled out the Inhumans 4 years too early? Haley thinks there are ways around it. And SP thinks that an Inhuman backstory before the movie would be a welcome addition to the way Marvel introduced Gamora and Nebula without any backstory at all.

Lauren brings up that is would be great if Skye’s Dad, The Doctor, is Mr. Hyde from Marvel Comics. But Haley likes Maximus The Mad better.

And don’t forget the Whitehall “origins” story that we saw in the episode. And Deputy Director May too!

Winter Soldier reported to be “central character” for Cap 3

Frank Grillo has multi-movie deal with Marvel

Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. One Shot: Marvel 75 Years From Pulp To Pop!

LOGO LoS 168x168

The @LegendsOfShield (Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Agents Lauren, Haley and Stargate Pioneer are joined for a fourth consecutive week by special guest, stowaway and Consultant Agent Wing as they break down the ABC television special Marvel 75 Years From Pulp To Pop! They also discuss the week in Marvel news, and enjoy all the awesome Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. feedback.

In this episode our hosts announce their new YouTube channel where they will also upload the podcasts to. Stargate Pioneer announces he has a beard and the other hosts agree it is a beard of evil. Also, Wing announces his goatee of evil and his gross facial hair growth technique. For Halloween Agent Lauren combined several of her favorite things and created one of the most fantastic costumes ever (see her twitter feed for a picture @sithwith) her idea for a sexy Thangorodrim from The Silmarillion fell through. No one got Stargate Pioneer’s X-Wing pilot costume. Nightwing did his annual Clark Kent costume and Haley didn’t dress up as anything and had no candy for trick or treaters. And Agent Lauren announced she loved to trick or treat at the drug dealer’s houses for full sized candy bars when she was growing up.

The foursome discuss who “THE Ralph Macchio” is and that Ralph Macchio the actor is NOT Ralph Macchio the Marvel comic editor. They also discuss a potential relationship between Ward and Taskmaster. Haley brings up that she thinks that Skye’s dad is Black Bolt’s brother, Maximus The Mad.

Haley’s not-seen movie list now includes: Showgirls, Top Gun, Skyfall, Magic Mike, Starman and Highlander. And Agent Haley’s excellent marketing idea in China for a giant robot head in Guardians Of The Galaxy definitely qualify her for a marketing job at Marvel. And Stargate Pioneer wonders if Haley Atwell made a mistake in filming and actually hit Clark Gregg during her Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. guest spot coming up on November 18th, 2014.

Lauren and her husband Scott came up with the theory that Heimdall probably knows that Loki is acting as Odin. And everyone is looking forward to Groot Christmas trees.

Both Nightwing and Lauren enjoyed the Daredevil movie. And Lauren is REALLY looking forward to the Jessica Jones’ Netflix series. And three of the four hosts would like to see a Black Widow movie (hint: Not Nightwing). Lauren is uuber excited about the upcoming Attack On Titan – Marvel crossover. And Lauren is also interested in writing for Marvel comics (and she is available too!).

Stan Lee is Marvel in soo many ways.

Stargate Pioneer certainly didn’t mind Emily Vancamp (Agent 13) touching Lola – big surprise there. He also mentions that this special is a good start for someone that didn’t know much about Marvel comics. If you’d like to delve deeper into the runnings of Marvel over the past 75 years, there’s the Stan Lee Biopic “With Great Power,” Fedric Wertham’s “Seduction Of The Innocent,”’s Batman’s Boners, Stan Lee’s Mutants, Monsters & Marvels, and Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked.

The four round out the podcast by discussion what the most influential comic book movie was from the 1978 Superman The Movie on. Movies discussed include Superman The Movie, Batman 1989, X-Men, and Iron Man 2008.

Wednesday’s Webcomic: Guilded Age

Guilded Age is a long-running, intricate, and hilarious high fantasy webcomic that surprises you with its depth and cleverness at nearly every turn, and one enormous plot twist you will not,  and I repeat not see coming. Billed as “the Saga of the Working Class Adventurer,” Guilded Age tells the story of a small group of ne’er-do-wells questing for cash. When they happen to get together and form a startlingly effective team, their local government decides to put them on salary to solve problems and spread peace, although this is usually achieved by the judicious use of violence. As their work takes on more and more political importance, their team grows, as well as the possibility that the very existence of their entire world is in jeopardy.

The comic uses interesting jumps in the story in the beginning, by telling you short stories from the team’s later missions while telling you the story of how they came together in the first place. As they reach the first climax in the story the comic the storytelling shifts into a direct line, with some side stories, frequent guest art interludes, and perspective shifts to the antagonists. Indeed, the many antagonists of this story are fascinating, with deep motivations and surprising placement. Layered between the crass jokes and jabs at MMO tropes is a nuanced plot with subtle politics and existential themes. The art is appropriately serious or cartoonish when appropriate with rich watercolor washes and tones. There was a changing of the guard in artists, and the change in style is subtle but distinct.

Page 1 Guilded Age

I’m going to wax poetic about this opening page here: Here is a beautifully drawn, colorful page that not only introduces and summarizes most of the principal characters but sets the tone for the entire epic adventure! This is a bar setter for opening pages.

The Authors and Their Other Works

The Guilded Age is created by a team: T Campbell, who writes both comics and crossword  puzzles,  Phil Kahn, a connoisseur of the internet and webcomics who also writes and draws a comic called Grown Ass Mans, and John Waltrip, known for the Robotech comics he worked on with his twin brother. The first artist was Erica Henderson who has worked in video games, comics, and illustration.
