Peter David & Mark Bagley return BEN REILLY to his SCARLET SPIDER roots

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Ben Riley is the clone The Jackal made, who thought he was Peter Parker, then thought he was a clone, then died, then was back, then thought he was Peter again, then found out he was a clone, then died, then came back and  became The Jackal. Well, in a semi-spoiler for the current CLONE CONSPIRACY storyline in Dan Slott’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Marvel has revealed that after that wraps up, Ben Riley (or a clone thereof) will pick back up his old mantle of SCARLET SPIDER for a new ongoing by fan favorites Peter David and Mark Bagley.

Marvel even provided an image, featuring the Scarlet Spider’s new look, a sleeker variation on his 90’s outfit. Oh, and his mask smiles.

BEN REILLY: THE SCARLET SPIDER Returns For All-New Series!

The Fan-Favorite Character Goes Solo in April

New York, NY—January 9th, 2017 — This April, one of the most controversial characters in Marvel history returns to don the mask (and hoodie!) once more. Today, Marvel is pleased to announceBEN REILLY: THE SCARLET SPIDER #1 – the new series from New York Times Bestselling creators Peter David (Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099) and Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-Man, All-New X-Men)! That’s right, Ben Reilly is webslinging his way back into comic shops everywhere later this year and he’s bringing two of the most accomplished & beloved Spider-Man creators of all-time with him! Only question is – will it be as a hero…or a villain?

It was the twist that shocked the world. Ben Reilly had returned, but not as he once was. Twisted and manipulated by the villainous Jackal, the fallen clone is out to break the cycle, and reclaim his destiny. Not as Peter Parker’s clone – but as his own man. Will suiting up once more as the Scarlet Spider be enough to outrun his personal demons? All while being able to stay one step ahead of the man hunting him – Kaine Parker – the former Scarlet Spider?!

“This book is not your usual Spider-Fare,” says Executive Editor, VP of Content & Digital Publishing Nick Lowe. “Peter David and Mark Bagley are taking this character into uncharted territory that’s both rip-roaring and troubling.”

His old life is over. It’s time for a new beginning. But can you ever truly outrun your past? Find out as the iconic fan-favorite character returns to the fore once again in BEN REILLY: THE SCARLET SPIDER #1 – coming this April!

UPDATE: 4th (of at least 5) part of the DEAD NO MORE teaser revealed.

Facebooktwitterredditmail

UPDATED 03/30/16 2:10:

Ok, Marvel has a 4th piece of the ever-growing DEAD NO MORE teaser image, STILL skipping the center which should reveal the mechanical armed menace we presume is DOC OCK or at least someone taken over by his mind. This new image includes familiar Spidey foes RHINO, LIZARD, and ELECTRO.

Dead_No_More_4

And here are all four images in position, around the missing center reveal:

Dead_No_More_Combined_3_30_16

ORIGINAL POST: Marvel has revealed the third…well…fourth part of their DEAD NO MORE IMAGE, noticeably skipping the third part that includes whomever is wielding those mechanical  arms (presumably Doc Ock, possibly the Living Brain containing Doc Ock’s min, also possibly someone from Spidey’s supporting cast now host to Doc Ock’s mind. …What? Spidey leads a complicated life.)

This new image adds Prowler, Scarlet Spider, and Madame Web to the mix, as well.

Here’s the new pic

And here’s the three pictures, in order, with the gap in the middle.

Marvel teases 2 part DEAD NO MORE image

Facebooktwitterredditmail

Marvel has released a two-part teaser image for the DEAD NO MORE story in Dan Slott’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.
The image includes a group of deceased Spider-Cast members, including Uncle Ben, Jean DeWolff, Captain Stacey, and Montana (the lasso-twirling member of the ENFORCERS who fell to his death in the KILL TO BE YOU arc of BIG TIME) among others. The second half of the image features Spidey tackling some metal tentacles, suggesting DOC OCK, whose body died during the mind-swapping SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN saga, only to have his mind seemingly die when he swapped back, allowing Peter Parker to return to the mantle of Spider-Man in order to defeat the Goblin King, Norman Osborne. In recent issues of ASM, Dock Ock’s concousness has been seen inhabiting the back-up files of his robotic henchman, the aptly named LIVING BRAIN.

Bachman’s Best – Silk #1 and Spider-Gwen #1

Facebooktwitterredditmail

The best thing I read last week was Silk #1 and Spider-Gwen #1 spinning out of the fantasticness that was Marvel’s Spider-Verse. For those that may not know Dan Slott brought us a spectacular story that had Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus a.k.a. the Superior Spider-Man in Peter Parker’s body from earlier in the same timeline gathering different versions of Spider-Man, and other spider totems, from all over the multiverse to fight a family called the Inheritors that scour the multiverse to devour spider totems. It was a super fun story with more spider action than anyone ever thought possible in one story, Dan Slott is now the best Spider-Man writer ever in my humble opinion. If you’re a fan of Spidey you should be checking out Spider-Verse. But enough about that, the Spider-Verse is over and now we are seeing some of the great new books coming out of that story.

spider-women

Silk #1 brings us the story of one Cindy Moon, a girl that was bit by the same spider that bit Peter Parker but then hidden away in a bunker to avoid being detected by the Inheritors. After being rescued/released by Peter Parker see finds herself now in a New York see doesn’t understand looking for a family that appears to have left her behind. This is a great first issue brought to us by wordsmith Robbi Thompson, some great line art by Stacey Lee, and some kicking colors by Ian Herring. It’s a fun read and well worth your time. Silk is relearning life among New Yorkers, dealing with her crazy spider powers which are not the same as Peter Parkers and of course trying to build a life for herself both in and out of costume. It looks like it’s going to be a fun ride. And the Dave Johnson cover I got is just awesome!

silk-1-stacey-lee-variant-109169

Spider-Gwen #1 was probably the funnest all around book I read last week as well as a beautiful addition to the Spider books. Introed in Spider-Verse #2 the character of a Spider-Woman portrayed by Gwen Stacey, affectionately called Spider-Gwen by the spider fans, in an alternate world where Gwen was bit and eventually Peter was the one that died. Spider-Gwen patrolled the streets of Manhattan for one issue and caused an uproar in the geek community, some of it negative of course, but most of it positive. The story was great and the artwork was fantastic, but what really set it apart was the suit design. If you haven’t seen the stir it caused just go Google Spider-Gwen and look at all the fan art, tons of pieces by artists from amateur to pro. And Marvel heard the uproar and responded in the best way giving Spider-Gwen her own series. Now sadly with Marvel heading into Secret Wars there is no telling if Spider-Gwen will come out the other side intact or changes or at all but in the meantime we have an amazing book to read. Wicked word play Jason Latour, ultra kinetic art by Robbi Rodriguez that is in the same category as Tradd Moore and Skottie Young in its frenetic energy, and killer colors by Rico Renzi that make Gwen’s New York both strikingly similar and yet very far from the New York of Spider-Man. This first issue introduces us to the Vulture of Gwen world and places her in his talons all the while not knowing that the band she drums for, The Mary Janes, may well be falling apart. Pure fun, beautiful bright artwork that nearly leaps off the page, go get it.

(And a quick tease for next week. The picture below is the stack of Action Lab books I’m about to read. Pretty sure I’m going to have something to say about them. See you then.)

Bachman’s Best – Spider-Man 2099 #1

Facebooktwitterredditmail

The best thing I read last week was Spider-Man 2099 #1.

Written by Peter David

Lines by Will Sliney

Color Art by Antonio Fabela and

Letters by VC’s Joe Caramagna

For those that aren’t aware Peter David actually created the first non-white(Irish/Spanish), non-Peter Parker, Spider-Man back when the Marvel 2099 universe was thought up and hit the shelves back in the ancient days of 1992. David presented the weird with a wholly new Spider-Man: Miguel O’Hara, with a new origin, variations on spider powers, and of course his own bucket of problems. Over the run of 42 issues Spider-Man 2099 quickly became my favorite book of the 2099 universe and a stand out highlight if great books from the 90’s. Before I started using my full name as handle I could be found, and still can be actually, on many a forum, blog, gaming network or chat room under the name Bach2099 which I used as an homage to this character. After the cancellation of all the 2099 books I bid him farewell and never expected to see him again.

Spider-Man2099VariantLeonardi-232b6

Then along came Superior Spider-Man. And as a fun way to mess with his pet, the fantastic Dan Slott tossed in some time jumping and brought Miguel O’Hara into the world of Spider-Ock, to save his grandfather from dying in the past and therefore negating Spider-Man 2099’s future, and to be just one more thorn in Spider-Ock’s side. Slott writing my favorite version of Spider-Man that isn’t Parker was a huge surprise in a series I was already loving. And thanks to the boys at Marvel, they made it even better by stranding Miguel O’Hara in the current Amazing Spider-Man universe/timeline.

So it breaks down like this. In the first issue on the first page you get all the history you really need as well as the return of/intro to Layla: Miguel’s assistant. By page 2 we have a new villain, page 4 a new love interest and residence, by page 6 he’s in the costume and flying through the steel canyons of Manhattan. The first issue is a full contained first adventure that opens lots of doors and gets all the wrong people asking questions, read it and you’ll understand.

SPIDER-MAN-2099-1-variant-cover-by-Skottie-Young

Break neck pacing to toss you in and get you interested, great line work making us feel like we are in Peter Parker’s New York but never letting us forget it’s a totally different ride. I just enjoyed the hell out of it and think any Spidey fan out there couldn’t go wrong putting their dollars down on this title. I hope for a long run this time but even if it’s just another 40 issues of Peter David getting to refresh Spider-Man 2099, I’ll be a happy man. You better go shocking get this book people!

C122107

BONUS!

A close 2nd place that I thought was worth mentioning this week went to Grayson #1. In all honesty I was not looking forward to this book. I thought the spy idea sounded ridiculous and basically a waste of my favorite DC character. I have every issue of Nightwing. I was lucky enough to grab Nightwing #1 with the spectacular Scott McDaniel cover off the rack back in 1995 and was hooked from the get go!  Then the present day bastards go and off my favorite DC character and now have him living in hiding. I was not thrilled about any of this. I actually dropped my DC titles on my pull list at my LCS down to just 1 book, the Snyder/Capullo Batman. That was the only book I was getting from DC.

Then I took a shot on Grayson #1, which my LCS was kind enough to pull for me with the unbearably cool Jock cover. Spectacular line and color work by Mikel Janin and Jeromy Cox respetively, a whole new beautiful world for Dick as long as DC can keep the art consistent. And a story to kill for, really it’s great. I’m a huge fan of Tim Seeley’s other comic work but wasn’t sure how he and Tom King were going to tackle this new world so I was skeptical to say the least. They nailed it. The issue is fun, it’s action packed, it drops a whole lot of story on you in a really short time. And the really important thing, Seeley gets Nightwing, sorry Grayson, you can tell he’s a fan. With 1 line delivered by ***SPOILER ALERT*** special guest the Midnighter we find out exactly what Seely thinks of Dick and it’s pretty much perfect. If you were ever a fan of the original boy wonder go give this first issue a spin. You’ll thank me.
