This morning Marvel announced that a new ongoing Iron Fist series will launch in the spring as part of the All-New Marvel Now! Writing and illustrating the book will be veteran Kaare Andrews. Andrews who’s work includes He has worked on Incredible Hulk, Ultimate X-Men,Gen¹³, The Amazing Spider-Man, hasn’t put out a lot of work for the publisher in recent years as he’s been absent from monthly comics. But that’s all going to change with the upcoming Iron Fist series.
In an interview with Hero Complex, the new series will be titled Iron Fist: The Living Weapon. It’ll feature Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, homecoming to the city where he grew up K’un Lun, and Andrews describes it “As kind of Bruce Wayne without a plan. He’s despondent. He is not connecting with life, and he doesn’t know why.” In addition, the title will be influenced by Jim Steranko’s much acclaimed run on Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Andrews also describes comics and film as the “yin and yang of my art making career.”
In speaking about the decision to have Andrews do the new series, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso revealed that both he and Andrews have a shared passion for martial arts films. “The way I looked at Iron Fist, I thought … I’d love to have someone come in and tell a movie, just treat the reader like they’ve stepped into a cinema, they’re sitting down in a seat, the lights go down, the curtain comes up.”
In addition to his writing and art duties, Andrews will be the colorist title and illustrate the covers, which Alonso believes that’s when Andrews is at his best: “His work is particularly inspired when he does that, when he takes full ownership of the book, and that’s what he’s done.”
Taking a look at these preview pages below, I think we can definitely all agree on that. Look for Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #1 at your local LCS this April.
