Thirty years ago, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich launched a franchise with this blockbuster movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader – though maybe not in the way they expected. When an Egyptologist decodes the symbols on an ancient artifact, the U.S. military opens a portal through the stars leading to another galaxy. On the distant world, they must lead a rebellion against the sun god Ra to find a way back home. This sci-fi epic from the Independence Day duo was mostly panned when it came out, and despite decent earning at the box office, it wasn’t a big enough hit for MGM to warrant a direct sequel. However, a few years later, a TV continuation appeared on Showtime, where it ran for four seasons before moving to the Sci-Fi Channel. In all, Stargate: SG-1 ran for ten seasons, with multiple spinoff series and TV movies produced. Now, we’re stepping across the threshold of the universe with Stargate!
