Last week, we talked about Song Sung Blue, Neil Diamond, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This week, we’ve got another color, musical icon, and Midwestern city in mind: purple, Prince, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Yes, the Purple One himself makes his feature film debut in this 1984 Albert Magnoli-directed rock opera. By 1984, Prince had already established himself as one of pop music’s most exciting and unpredictable stars, but this film, loosely based on his own life, transformed him into a cultural phenomenon. And then there’s the Oscar-winning soundtrack, including “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and, of course, that title track. The combined successes made Prince only the third artist at the time, after The Beatles and Elvis Presley, to have a Number One album, film, and song in the same calendar year. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation as a work of cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance. The music made the movie legendary, while Prince’s charisma, fashion, and performances cemented his place in pop-culture history. While the Artist Forever Known as Prince sadly passed in 2016, this film and his legacy will reign forever… in that Purple Rain.
