You may recall the announcement just a few months ago that Google acquired Nest Labs for 3.2 Billion Dollars – well it appears they are dealing with their first safety concern since the acquisition. The company announced on Friday that they would halt all sales of their hi-tech smoke alarm for concerns of a possible defect that could cause users to turn off the unit accidentally.
One of the most appealing features of the smoke alarm was an ability to silence nuisance alarms using a simple wave of the hand, known as the “Nest Wave” – apparently research has shown that this can inadvertently be activated. “We observed a unique combination of circumstances that caused us to question whether the Nest Wave … could be unintentionally activated. This could delay an alarm going off if there was a real fire,” said Tony Fadell, CEO of Nest.
While the company is currently looking for a solution to correct the bug they stated that there will be automatic disabling of the feature on units connected to a Nest account via Wi-Fi (yep, they can do that). It’s estimated that it will take two to three months to find a solution which allows the feature to be re-enabled.
