Popcorn and Primetime: Origins
Wow a great start to the Halloween week with our fantasy shows. The Originals do a complete 180 on who is really the bad guys and we find out Davina’s Origin story and why she is in Marcels care. Ravenswood we find out some of the kids survive, and more about Luke and Olivia’s parents. Marvel’s Shields take a much needed break with a re-showing of the pilot.
The Originals: Saints and Sinners
In The Originals tonight we find out the truth between the witches and Marcel, and the real reason they brought Klaus to New Orleans. Divina is the eye of the storm brewing in the bayou, and the war is just going to grow from here. The story is told by three different characters throughout the episode. Marcel to Klaus, Sophie to Rebekah and Hayley, and Divina to the newly reawakened Elijah. We find out that the witches do a harvesting of souls every three hundred years to reconnect to their ancestors and reestablish their powers. The Harvesting is a ritual we find out where they call the elements of earth air wind and water to take the souls of the girls into a limbo till all 4 have died then according to the witches the girls are to be reborn. Sophie originally tried to stop the harvesting but no one would listen to her and her niece and Devina were two of the girls that were chosen to endure for the coven. Davina tells us they treated them like princesses till they were lead to have their necks slit. We are also told at this point from Marcel that he learned about the witches plan through Sophie because he was her lover at the time. Marcel however promises her that he would not interfere, that was until the priest of Saint Anns called upon Marcel for help. Sophie had turned to him for guidance, and he was not going to let 4 inocent girls die. He has an argument with the witches that was interrupted by his nephew. When the nephew is told to leave, the witches curse
the poor boy driving him mad and he proceeds to kill the children of the church. This was Cami’s brother, and the fear and sadness in Klaus face is very apparent for a split second. I wonder how he is going to be able to tell her about the truth. Marcel interrupted the ritual on the advice of the priest, and with his own moral code of not harming the children. During the ritual the first two are sacrificed as the witches planned, Marcel’s vampires attack right after the second and during the Chaos Sophie’s niece is still sacrificed but Marcel is able to protect Davina. The harvesting was working though, because Davina has all the powers that was supposed to go back into the group upon the reawakening. Elijah offers to help Davina learn to control her powers and bring her the grimoires of his mother as long as she stays on his side of the three way battle. Elijah is welcomed home, with the biggest little sister hug from Rebekah and slapped by Hayley for disappearing. We learn from Elijah that Sophie Promised her sister that she would do anything to finish the ritual so that her niece could come back to life.
Slap, thats what I felt too. Here I thought it was a vengence thing from Marcel and it seems that it was the witches bent on vengeance. Now I wonder why the wolves were ran from the city? hopefully they get that in soon. Next episode seems to be just as grand because they start trying to kill Hayley. I figure it will be at Devina’s hands the figure out how to unbind Hayley from Sophie
Ravenswood:
Tonight on Ravenswood we find out Miranda didn’t survive the car crash and is now haunting Calib. Remy is finding out more about the pattern, and fate starts trying to take their lives. Oliva is elected homecoming queen despite the red paint incident in the parade last episode and Luke continues to pursue Remy’s love interest. This is becoming a very teen Final Destination style show. I mean great concept but I can’t see it lasting more that a season unless they can find a way to break the curse then they have to introduce more supernatural situations. Its a good show but not alot really happens each episode other than teen drama, but it is base on pretty little liars which is all drama.
Our popcorn for the night is is a spicy and salty man’s flavor, Spicy Caramel Bacon Popcorn. This is great parried with milkshakes or a sweet soda.
Spicy Caramel Bacon Popcorn
Ingredients:
5-6 slices of bacon
Nonstick cooking spray
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup popcorn kernels
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 cups white granulated sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 teaspoons fine sea salt
Direction:
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment and lay bacon side-by-side. Transfer baking sheet to hot oven and cook bacon for 15 minutes, and until crispy and brown. Remove and place on paper towels to drain. When cool, cut into dice-sized pieces.
-
Lightly coat two large heatproof rubber spatulas and a large mixing bowl with nonstick cooking spray. In a large saucepan or pot with a lid, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the popcorn kernels, cover, and keep the saucepan moving until all of the kernels have popped, about 4 minutes. Transfer the popped popcorn to the large prepared bowl, removing any unpopped kernels.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the baking soda and cayenne pepper. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, butter, salt, and 1/2 cup water. Cook over high heat, without stirring, until the mixture becomes a light golden-yellow caramel, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and carefully whisk in the baking soda mixture (the mixture will bubble up). Quickly fold in bacon bits. Pour the caramel over the popcorn and toss, like a salad, until all of the popcorn is evenly coated with the caramel.
-
Pour the popcorn onto a large baking pan and quickly flatten and separate it into small pieces while it is still warm. Cool to room temperature, about 15 minutes. Once it is cool, store it in a well-sealed airtight container.
-
Caramel popcorn will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
