James Tynion breaks THE EIGHT SEAL at IDW

Nightmares and Reality Blur
In The Eighth Seal
Political Intrigue Meets Cosmic Horror This December

San Diego, CA (September 1, 2015) – The horror/political thriller series, The Eighth Seal is a fantastically unique and well-executed series that IDW Publishing is proud to bring to print this December.

James Tynion IV, writer of TMNT/Batman, also available in December, scribes a story about a woman whose visceral nightmares about transforming into a demonic monster start to bleed into reality. But this woman isn’t just any woman; she is the First Lady of the United States, and this is all happening under an intense political spotlight. As she struggles with the loss of her civilian lifestyle, she is also seemingly losing grasp on her mind…or do these visions hold some darker truth?

“This story is like the TV show ‘The West Wing,’ with a little of the horror classic ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ and some ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ all rolled in to one. It’s got political intrigue, shadowy figures, and of course a terrifying demon to scare you in all different ways,” said Comic Spectrum.

The Eighth Seal is the purest work of horror I’ve tackled in my career, and I’m thrilled to see it come to life again in print,” said series writer, Tynion IV. “There’s nothing more frightening than the distinct feeling that you’re going insane, that something in you has twisted and is pulling you towards your darkest instincts… It’s the fear that something inside of you can destroy everything you love. And when you’re the First Lady of the United States, the stakes are only that much higher.”

The series originally released by Mark Waid’s digital comics website Thrillbent.com features beautifully wicked art byJeremy Rock and covers by a slew of talented artists, including Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo and subscription variant covers by Travel Foreman (Animal Man, Birds of Prey).

“I’ve been a huge fan of James and Jeremy’s work on The Eighth Seal since I first saw it, and it makes me very happy to see this series come to IDW,” said series editor, Michael Benedetto. “The atmosphere here is horror at its finest, and I’m sure many will agree after picking up the first issue. The political and psychological elements are blended perfectly and lead to an ending that does not disappoint!”

Eighth Seal is a unique take on both a political drama with a demonic possession horror story. The writing is solid and art goes above and beyond what we normally see in a horror comic. Try out this comic and you’ll be so freaked out that you’ll just have to come back to find out more.” – Comic Spectrum

Launched by Lee and Buscema in 1968, the Silver Surfer’s first solo-series ran for 18 issues, captivating readers and setting the bar incomparably high.

IDW is honored to publish this esteemed collection with the help of Marvel Comics and the Buscema family.

The 12” x 17” collection will be releasing this October, just in time for the holidays. Look for more information and Artist’s Edition announcements in the coming months!

WHAT IS AN ARTIST’S EDITION?
AN ARTIST’S EDITION PRESENTS COMPLETE STORIES WITH EACH PAGE SCANNED FROM THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL ART.

While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, corrections, blue pencils, paste-overs, all the little nuances that make original art unique. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Compilation of Ditko’s Short Comics Coming This November

San Diego, CA (August 19, 2014) –IDW Publishing and Yoe Books continue their incisive look at Steve Ditko’s work with Ditko’s Shorts coming this November.

Craig Yoe exclaims, “To put it short: Steve Ditko is ‘Ditko hands’ down the greatest living artist from main stream comics! His mastery is especially apparent in these amazing short stories where he’s in, he’s out and your mind has just been totally altered!”

Ditko may best known as the artist and co-creator of larger-than-life characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange but did you know that he could also work on a smaller (or short) scale and achieve very big results? Ditko’s Shorts is a fun and incredibly fascinating compilation of short comics one, two, and three pages in length, showcasing that only a brilliant master like Ditko could tell such dramatic and compelling tale in such compact form.

Taken from rare comic books from a who’s who of publishers, all the short comics collected for this volume have been meticulously restored and printed in a beautiful, large-format book. The genres show Ditko’s great range as he easily navigates horror, fantasy, science fiction, western, and even humorous stories. This is a snapshot of his career that is not to be missed!

Also not to be missed are the insightful introductions by punk rocker and comics historian Fester Faceplant and Eisner Award-winner Craig Yoe.

“More than just a hat-trick of Spider Man, Dr. Strange, and Mr. A, this collection is a perfect showcase of Ditko’s mastery of any genre he put his stamp on,” said Fester Faceplant.

MACHI KORO EXPANSION TO SUPPORT FIVE-PLAYER GAMEPLAY

Facebooktwitterredditmail

THIS FALL’S HARBOR EXPANSION WILL ADD NEW
MECHANICS AND A FIFTH PLAYER OPTION

San Diego, CA (May XX, 2014) – Today, IDW Games announced a small-box expansion for the hotly anticipated Machi Koro card game. Machi Koro: The Harbor Expansion will include 10 new establishments, one new starting establishment, two new landmarks (82 cards total), and the ability to play Machi Koro with up to five players. Machi Koro will hit shelves this July, and the expansion will follow before Christmas.

“There are so many exciting elements to this expansion,” said Pandasaurus Director of Marketing, Molly Wardlaw. “Get ready for more zany properties, more players, and even more fun!”

This is the second major announcement from IDW Games this month regarding Machi Koro. At the beginning of May, it was announced that five copies of an exclusive pre-order card would be included in each game headed to the Hobby Market. With today’s expansion announcement, it becomes clear that the exclusive pre-order card will be compatible with the new Machi Koro: Harbor Expansion. The expansion will offer players new game mechanics and a variant play option that changes which resources are available for purchase at the start of each game.

Machi Koro has been a focal point for IDW Games,” said IDW Director of Business Development, Jerry Bennington. “There’s been nothing but positive response regarding us bringing the game to the U.S. and we hope this expansion announcement shows our commitment to supporting Machi Koro with everything we can do.”

This first expansion not only adds the ability to bring a fifth player to the table for your Machi Koro sessions, there’s also big changes to the strategy as players will be working to complete six landmarks instead of the four required to win the base game.  Further changing the landscape of Machi Koro, the expansion changes how each game begins, as only 10 types of establishments will hit the table for any one game. This move should add variety to an already incredibly re-playable game.

The pre-order exclusive card offer ends on May 28th, so fans are encouraged to head to their friendly local game shop and put their order in today!

Harlan Ellison®’s Acclaimed Star TrekTM Script Comes to Comics

Facebooktwitterredditmail
IDW Will Adapt the Award-Winning Original Teleplay of “City On the Edge of Forever” As a Comic-Book Miniseries

San Diego, CA (March 6, 2014) – Star Trek: The Original Series episode “City on the Edge of Forever” is regarded by many (including a TV Guide poll of the “100 Best TV Episodes of All Time”) as the greatest Star Trek episode of all time, but there’s much more to the story than fans saw on TV. Harlan Ellison’s original teleplay for “City on the Edge of Forever” was modified before the episode was filmed, but now, at long last, fans will be able to enjoy his original teleplay in the form of an all-new miniseries coming from IDW in June: Star Trek: Harlan Ellison’s City on the Edge of Forever: The Original Teleplay.

Ellison’s original teleplay won both the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as the Writer’s Guild of America’s Award for Most Outstanding Teleplay.   For decades, legions of fans have speculated about the episode’s history, but few people have read the original teleplay, which is very different from the televised version. This comic-book miniseries, produced under the guidance of Harlan Ellison himself, now offers fans everywhere the opportunity to see a classic Star Trek episode the way no one has seen it before.

Adapting the teleplay for the comics series are writers Scott Tipton and David Tipton, no strangers to IDW’s Star Trek comic universe; interior art will be painted by J.K. Woodward, coming off the well-received Star Trek: TNG/Doctor Who maxi-series written by the Tipton brothers. Each issue of the series will feature a special cover by artist Juan Ortiz, whose artistic interpretations of every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series were recently published in an oversize hardcover collection, Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz. Variant covers will be provided by movie poster artist/Star Trek: Khan cover artist Paul Shipper.

“Presenting Harlan Ellison’s brilliant original script for ‘City on the Edge…’ has been a goal of ours since IDW first began publishing Star Trek comics in 2007,” said series editor and IDW Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall. “The episode justifies its position atop ‘best Star Trek episodes’ lists but even it ain’t nuthin’ compared to what Ellison did in his original teleplay. This is truly going to be a Star Trek adventure unlike any other, even to fans who have that beloved episode memorized.”

Harlan Ellison says: “It was a superlative joy of my long life to have worked with Leonard Nimoy, who became my friend, and many others at Star Trek; and an equally heart-happy joy to be working with J.K. and the Tipton Bros. and Chris Ryall on this long-awaited visual of my (humbly, I say it) brilliant original ‘City…’”

Star Trek’s “City on the Edge of Forever” originally aired on April 6, 1967, as the penultimate episode of Star Trek’s first season. The episode is, at its most basic, a poignant love story as well as a breathtaking trip through space and time, from the future all the way through 1930s America, as Kirk and Spock race to apprehend a renegade criminal and restore the order of the universe. IGN awarded it the number-one spot in their list of the Top 10 Classic Star Trek Episodes. Further, TV Guide named the episode one of its 100 Most Memorable Moments in TV History. The first-ever comic-book adaptation of the teleplay as Harlan Ellison originally intended it is a true publishing event.

Star Trek: Harlan Ellison’s Original City on the Edge of Forever Teleplay #1 (of 5) will be available in June and is under license by CBS Consumer Products

John Byrne Expands Star TrekTM Visions
Ongoing Mission Becomes Ongoing Series

San Diego, CA (February 28, 2014) – Last year, comic-book legend, John Byrne set out “to explore strange new worlds” within the Star Trek universe, using a unique technique, the photonovel. The resulting Star Trek Annual 2013, which is completely sold out through Diamond and headed for a second printing, was a creative success due to this distinctive storytelling device. This May, Byrne will continue his quest “to seek out new life and new civilizations” using the photonovel format to produce an ongoing bi-monthly series, Star Trek: New Visions.

“What John does on these photonovel stories is nothing short of amazing,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Office/Editor-in-Chief. “He’s moved far beyond photo-manipulation and montage to constructing his own set pieces, uniforms, and characters. Much more than just comic stories, these tales are the closest thing to Original Series-era ‘lost episodes’ that the world will ever see.”   Each issue of this all-new series will be an extra-length affair. New Visions begins by going through the looking glass to tell the story of what happened after the classic “Mirror, Mirror” episode of the original series. In issue #1, “The Mirror, Cracked,” the crew of the Starship: Enterprise discovers two strangers in their midst, and things take a turn when they learn that one of them has made a pact with one of James Kirk’s oldest foes.

Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Ben 10 And More Unite In The ‘Super Secret Crisis War’!

San Diego, CA (February 28, 2014) – When an unstoppable evil spreads across the universe, heroes across time and space will be summoned together to face a threat that none of them could have possibly dealt with on their own. In Super Secret Crisis War!, the fate of the universe will depend upon a stoic warrior, a kid hero, a mad scientist, a fearsome trio of lab experiments, and… Ed, Edd and Eddy?!?

This June, the heroes of some of Cartoon Network’s most popular shows will join together at IDW for this all-ages, mega-colossal crossover where worlds and characters collide like never before! Written by the legendary Louise Simonson, the six-issue event will feature the herculean heroes going toe-to-toe against the nefarious nemeses Aku, Vilgax, Mandark, Mojo Jojo, attempting to thwart their conniving conquest.

“I love writing group books! So obviously, Super Secret Crisis War! is my dream job!” says series writer, Simonson, “Even researching the series is fun—who doesn’t love watching cartoons!? Especially excellent, award-winning cartoon series like Samurai Jack, Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Ed, Edd, & Eddy. But the very best part is seeing the art and design so beautifully realized by the wonderful Derek Charm. Fun characters, great artist, and a really fine editorial team at IDW!”

Art and cover duties will be handled The Powerpuff Girls writer and artist Derek Charm. Each issue will also feature a subscription cover by The Powerpuff Girls writer and artist, Troy Little that combine to form one massive image, so make sure to collect them all. Additional variants by top artists including Katie Cook (My Little Pony) will also be available for this special event.

The beloved Cartoon Network franchises at IDW have brought back the nostalgia for old fans and introduced a whole new audience to the amazing creations by series creators Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls), and Man of Action (Ben 10).

And starting in July, the madness expands! Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Johnny Bravo, Codename: Kids Next Door, and Cow and Chicken will all take center stage as they join the madness of the Super Secret Crisis War in their own one-shots. Written by Ivan Cohen, Kate Leth, Erik Burnham, Scott Peterson, & Jim Zub, respectively, each one-shot will tie in to the Super Secret Crisis War showing the full scope of the looming threat.

With all of these classic characters sharing the page, the universe will never be the same!
