The upcoming sci-fi/comedy comic book, UNIT 44 answers the question, ‘What would happen if Area 51 employees forgot to pay the rent on their off-site storage unit, and the secret contents were sold at public auction?’
After the storage unit is purchased by a pair of small town opportunists, bumbling government agents Gibson and Hatch learn that the only item that can prevent a full scale alien invasion was inside the unit and quickly set out to recover it.
Series writer Wes Locher and artist Eduardo Jimenez have turned to Kickstarter to fund the first issue of an intended 4-issue miniseries, seeking $2,000 to pay for the artwork and physical printing of the book.
“I’ve written comics in a lot of different genres, but I really wanted do something fun,” said Locher. “I think the medium needs more of that.”
The campaign raised 53% of its funding goal in the first 24 hours and offers rewards that range from electronic and physical copies of the book, to retro lunchboxes featuring the characters, to the ability to appear as a character in the pages of comic.
Locher and Jimenez are excited to debut a comic book that’s a bit off the beaten path from the typical superhero fare associated with the medium.
“I got to write a funny story about Area 51, aliens, and government conspiracies and now, people are paying to read it,” said Locher. “I need a time machine so I can go high five 14-year-old me.”
