Despite the franchise being almost 30 years old, Back To The Future remains incredibly popular. This is true even with the younger crowds today. Of course Legos also remain incredibly popular across multiple generations. I grew up with Legos and there are kids today that are combining Lego sets and imagination to create entirely new worlds. Of course kids today have the advantage that Lego is now creating specially designed Lego sets for properties such as DC Comics, Harry Potter, and Marvel comics. Growing up, I had very basic sets centered around real life towns and settings. The space series were just getting popular near the end of my childhood.
Now, its like my childhood has returned as Lego has announced they will be creating sets based around Back To The Future. As a fan of both Legos and Back to The Future this is incredibly exciting news. But, how did this happen?
Lego sponsors a web-site that is in essence a Kickstarter for Lego projects. This project is known as Cuusoo. Fans can post their proposed Lego set ideas online. If an idea attracts 10,000 votes from fans then a review board will be convened to determine if a Lego set will in fact be mass produced. The Back To The Future series was just announced for release in 2013. That’s right kiddies, we get Back To The Future Legos this year!
No prices have been announced yet, but I’m sure there are many collectors who will buy this set regardless of the price. To be honest, I’m probably one of those collectors. Maybe I’m being hopelessly optimistic, but I don’t see these Legos going for incredibly high prices.
If you think this story couldn’t get any better there is one last thing that makes this news even better. When a project is approved and produced through the Cuusoo process the creators receive 1% of the profit from sales. Well, the creators will be donating their entire share of the profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. So now, there’s even more reasons to buy the Back To The Future Lego sets.
The picture at the top of the screen shows the proposed Lego set. The designers at Lego will probably tweak things a bit before the official release in 2013. For the most part, this is what you will be receiving and I think it looks great. For a close up look at everything in the new Lego set check out the YouTube video below. Don’t mind me, I’ll be sitting back here counting down the days until I can buy a set of Back To The Future Legos for myself.
