Legends of Halloween comes to a close for 2026 by going to the dogs! We started with rats, we spent time with mothers and motherly figures, and now we’re wrapping up with a 2025 canine-centric horror flick that premiered at SXSW! In the film, writer-director Ben Leonberg turns a classic horror trope on its head by telling a haunted-house story from the dog’s perspective. Starring Leonberg’s own dog, Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, the film follows the loyal pet who senses a supernatural presence threatening his owner, Todd, in their new rural home. Shot over three years on a shoestring budget of just $70,000, this inventive indie grossed $8.8 million and earned rave reviews for its atmosphere, craftsmanship, and four-legged lead. Indy even took home an Astra Award for his performance, becoming the first dog to win a major film acting award previously reserved for humans. But now we’ll decide if Good Boy deserves Best in Show, or if it should spend Halloween in the doghouse!
