From the depths of his birth year – 1980 – Beef brings us a tale of horror and suspense based on Stephen King’s classic novel. Yes, for the second month in a row, Beef picked a movie based on a story by Stephen King. Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Yes, it is that movie, the one directed by Stanley Kubrick and all-but disowned by King himself. Starring Jack Nicholson as Jack, a struggling writer who takes a winter gig at a mountain hotel… Seriously, the first red flag here is that a resort in Colorado can’t find a way to make it “economically viable” to stay open during ski season. Who runs this place? In tow are Jack’s wife, played by Shelley Duvall, and their precognitive son, Danny. Hijinks ensue when the place turns out to be haunted, driving everyone insane just as a snowstorm cuts them off from the outside world. In 1980, critical reviews were lukewarm at best, accusations of on-set cruelty swirled like snowflakes, and its bestselling author’s own chilly response to the adaptation tarnished the film’s release. However, time has since been kind, and the film has been critically reassessed and is now listed as one of the greatest horror films ever made.
