Episode 026 “Atari, Ryzen and Samsung Frames a TV”

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

Kicking off with our huge announcement! That’s right, digitalSoup is an official member of the GonnaGeek.com Podcast Network!  The guys then dive into some more of Jason’s PC woe’s and his plans on his next build which includes the new Ryzen SKU. Atari announces the Ataribox, a mystery machine in the making. Samsung finally releases their new Frame TV at a premium price and then the conversation stays with TV and movies including a potential John Wick TV spinoff and a “What If” discussion about movies swapping cultures. Plus move over Pokemon Go because Garfield Go is now a real thing!

Weekly Riddle:
A man is trapped in a room. The room has only two possible exits: two doors. Through the first door there is a room constructed from magnifying glass. The blazing hot sun instantly fries anything or anyone that enters. Through the second door there is a fire-breathing dragon. How does the man escape?
Answer at the end of the episode!

Atari is working on a new console called the Ataribox?!?!

Atari CEO Fred Chesnais told GamesBeat in an exclusive interview that his fabled video game company is working on a new game console.  Chesnais declined to describe a lot of details about the console. But he said it is based on PC technology. He said Atari is still working on the design and will reveal it at a later date.

Samsung’s Frame TV

The TV that looks like a piece of framed artwork on your wall is now available for purchase for the low price of $1999 – $2799 plus up to an additional $500 depending on how you want to customize the materials and look of the frame.

A John Wick TV Series in the works?
It looks like we’ll be seeing the universe of John Wick, the super mysterious world of assassins, brought into a TV Series mode. While no networks have been announced just yet, it’s in development at Lionsgate and is going by the working title of “The Continental”. Keanu is not the star, but is slated for guest appearances.

Garfield GO!

So in a true knock off of the popular Pokemon GO Mobile game, apparently Garfield GO is a real thing. Described on their site as a “brand new augmented reality treasure hunt game, featuring everyone’s favorite lasagna-loving cat!” you can now go adventuring with Garfield. Looks to be available on both iOS and Android and available in the US, Canada and Australia.

Episode 025 “Farewell Adam West, Hello Black Panther Trailer, LogMeIn Locks Jason Out and E3 Gaming News”

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

Busy week starting starting out with a big shoutout and thank you to The Naked Porch Podcast for a great review over on Apple Podcasts! Jason has a big issue with the LogMeIn service for remotely accessing PC’s and Adam has a few better alternatives to help him out. We say farewell to our original Batman, Adam West, as he passed away this last week. The Black Panther Trailer has dropped, it looks awesome but the guys still don’t know what it’s really about! Then it’s on to gaming with the XBox One X announcement and some other great gaming news coming out of the E3 2017 conference – plus a direct competitor to Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the newish game from publisher Tequila Works, called RiME.

WEEKLY RIDDLE:

We travelled the sea far and wide. At one time, two of my sailors were standing on opposite sides of the ship. One was looking west and the other one east. And at the same time, they could see each other clearly. How can that be possible?

ANSWER GIVEN AT THE END OF THE EPISODE!

Recommended Remote Access Options

Jason had some issues with LogMeIn…. Here are some alternatives that Adam recommended to help support your friends, family, and business.

For personal use: https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

For business: https://www.connectwise.com/software/control

Black Panther Trailer

In a great looking trailer, the guys are excited about this upcoming movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though they have no real idea what it’s about.

Scorpio is now Xbox One X!

Launching November 7, the Xbox One X features the most powerful specs in the company’s history.  These specs allow the console to run the Xbox Oquine’s current library of games with faster load times, improved anisotropic filtering, and supersampling, which means the console’s current games will look sharper on 1080p televisions.

RiME

Released on May 26th, 2017 by developer Tequila Works and publisher Grey Box & Six Foot, this looks to be a direct competitor to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However instead of being a Nintendo Switch only title, RiME is available on virtually all systems, including PC, so everyone can get their fix of some great large scale adventuring!

Days Gone Gameplay Trailer
Super intense zombie slaying game Jason found the trailer for a little while back and it’s now been announced as a Sony Exclusive title.

COOL THING OF THE WEEK
Storeo and VideoGrade for Instagram and Video editing.

Mophie Wireless Charging Cases:
Are they worth it? They look cool, especially with the built in magnetic mount for vehicles, but is it just another bit of marketing hype or actually useful?

Episode 021 “The Amazon Echo set to Show off a new trick”

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

As the digital assistant wars heat up the Amazon Echo Show comes out with a brand new touchscreen feature while Microsoft’s Cortana get’s a holographic upgrade. Some big releases for XBox One and their backwards compatibility sale and the release of Injustice 2, both happening May 16th. The new Star Trek: Discovery series is winding up, tiny drone technology coming to the military and law enforcement and Jason has a special thank you and treat for all digitalSoup listeners with an invite to his own personal server on the great pc game, Ark: Survival Evolved.

WEEKLY RIDDLE:

Feed me and it will give me life. But give me a drink and I will die. What am I?

ANSWER AT THE END OF THE EPISODE!

Amazon Echo Show: The digital assistant wars continue to heat up as Amazon announced the Echo Show, a new hybrid of the popular Echo device that now includes a 7” touchscreen to allow Alexa to not just give you answers, but show them to you. From watching YouTube videos, such as those done by Jason on gaming and Dave on photography, to making video calls and of course all of the standard Echo functionality this has potential to be the next direction in the war between Apple, Google and Amazon. But what about Microsoft’s Cortana? Who cares you say? Well, according to Microsoft there are more than 145 million users of their personal assistant within Windows 10, but one man has taken it to the next level. Mr. Jarem Archer has taken it upon himself to build a “holographic” version of the famous Cortana, much like we saw in the popular gaming series Halo.

Huge Sale on XBox One backwards compatibility games starting May 16th!: All XBox One owners get set as games will be discounted up to 75%! Full list of titles is not yet available but so far the expected sales will include Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV and Skate 3.

Star Trek: Discovery: While there has been no official release date set, this prequel to Star Treck: The Original Series is set to star Riann Wilson and looks to give Trek fans a brand new series to dive into. But there is a catch, being able to watch it may be tricky.

Creepy Lights Out video short that the feature lengthy movie was based on. Watch at your own risk because this one takes the creepy factor up to 11!

Tiny drones giving soldiers more visual range: The Snipe Nano Quadrotor, a pocket sized drone made by AeroVironment, is set to be added to the regular arsenal of our soldiers in the battlefield. Created to be nearly silent, they have great range and a top speed of 22mph, it’s another great tool to help keep our soldiers safe. Should also be released to our law enforcement agencies by the end of the year. Great tool or getting too close to big brother-esque spying?

Jason’s Ark: Survival Evolved Personal Server

Calling all Ark: Survival Evolved players, the Arkhaeologists server had just reset to zero with a fresh copy of The Volcano map! Come check out this private server with lots of great mods and multipliers. We would love to build a community of like minded nerds having fun and you might see some of us digitalSoup hosts in game! Jason is the owner of this server so you might see him off and on for sure! This is digitalSoup’s gift to our listeners.

COOL GADGET AND SITE OF THE WEEK:

INJUSTICE 2 RELEASED: The super popular DC Comics game that allows you to battle through a cinematic storyline and finally settle the score of who would actually win in a fight between Superman and Batman is set to release May 16th and it looks epic! The good folks over at Gamespot have put together a list of all the characters included/announced so far with actual gameplay screen captures of each if you want to have a look.

Episode 018 “Games, Apps and Quiz Show Facts”

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

It’s another big week with Utomik announcing a brand new subscription gaming service, Nintendo announcing plans for the SNES Mini and Apple removing the price tag on a few of it’s most popular apps! Then Jason has a big surprise for us as he debuts an all new game, the digitalSoup Quiz show! Can Adam and Usually Dave manage to get a single question right?! The X-Files dropped some news and then we wrap up with a great listener question about being frustrated with the video quality coming out of his DSLR camera and if there is something he can do about it or should he just use his phone?

Utomik Subscription PC Game Service

Currently in open beta Utomik is a subscription PC game service similar to what Microsoft is doing with their X-Box One Game Pass.  The service currently has 505 games and it says they add about 30 games a month.  There are triple A titles from a few years back and a lot of “mobile” looking games.  Subscriptions are cheap (at least during beta) with a single license being $6 and a family play for $10 (allows up to four family members to log in).  Definitely a service to watch.

SNES Mini A Reality?

We joked about it in last week’s show, but it looks like it’s been confirmed that the NES Classic Mini : Super Nintendo Entertainment System may be scheduled for release this Christmas. Rumor? Wishful thinking? Fact? IF the SNES mini is real, what games do you want to see on it?

Apple has made these apps free for all Mac and iOS users

Apple has rolled out updates to three of its own apps — iMovie, GarageBand and iWork suite (including Numbers, Keynote and Pages) — making them free for all the iOS and macOS users.  This is great news for everyone except for those that have just purchased it! Will Apple issue refunds to make it right?

The X-Files Is Returning for a New 10-Episode Season

“Fox has commissioned a second 10-episode series of The X-Files event series” Time reports.  Gillian Anderson, who plays Dana Scully, has also been tweeting about it to David Duchovny asking “You ready for more of this @davidduchovny? ? #TheXFiles”  This is great news for all conspiracy theorists out there!

New Superhero Comic, Project Grand Shadows, doing something brilliant

A homeless man recruited to take part in an experiment that goes wrong…. Sure, a fairly common comic book theme….but instead of each panel being hand drawn and illustrated they are using highly stylized photos. What do you think comic book fans? Super cool new twist to be excited about or just a silly gimmick? Could comic book photography be the next big genre of photography? Follow the full project on their website  and for behind the scenes video check out the YouTube channel here!

Kicking the show off on a fiery note, we discuss our issue with YouTube, the problem we ran into, the (sort of ) resolution. WARNING! Things may get a little heated.

Nintendo discontinues NES Classic Mini

After being constantly sold out and demand very high, Nintendo makes the logical business choice of discontinuing the NES Classic Mini, is it really gone for good?

Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator

Adam has a great recommendation for a game where you can finally settle the argument over how Chuck Norris will fare against a full Roman army and how many chickens will it take to wipe out the German world war II army.

Sony overtakes Nikon in the US Full Frame camera market

With a 23% growth since this same period in 2016, Sony passes Nikon and is now 2nd only behind Canon in US Full Frame Camera sales. Could the April Fools joke of Fujikon or Nikony actually come true?

Time Magazine list of 5 camera’s that are better than your phone camera.

We all know the saying, the best camera is the one you have with you, which is why so many people rely on the camera built into their phone. Time Magazine goes out on a limb here with a list of 5 cameras they deem better than your phone. Sure it’s a nice list, but is this really newsworthy?

Who even needs a camera with Google’s ideas for computational photoraphy.
The good folks over at The Verge put up an interesting article discussing the what if aspect of cameras and photography as they merge with high end tech, specifically computational photography. Absurd? Terrifying? Exciting? What do you think?

Samsung Galaxy S8 eliminates the physical Home Button

In what is being called a bold move, Samsung has dropped the physical home button from their phones, opting instead for a pressure sensitive on screen home button option. Is this a big deal or just one more thing for people to freak out about?

Picture it, Good Friday, sitting at your desk at work and all of a sudden you are getting notifications from everywhere that the brand new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi just went live! We know you watched it, but what did you think? What will the old, weathered Skywalker saying he only knows one truth….It’s time for the Jedi to end, mean for the franchise?

Mark Hamill & Daisy Ridly’s Epic Star Wars: Force for Change

Added bonus! Check out a great interaction between Mark & Daisy as they announce a great contest they are sharing on Omaze, brilliant interactions and really a chance of a lifetime if you win!
