Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditlinkedinmail

In a very special bonus episode your favorite geeks travel back in time to give you a taste of what digitalSoup would have been like had they been doing a show back in the eighties! It’s an awesome decade when the WWF was king, CD’s were new tech and the biggest movies were starring Stallone and Michael J Fox. Buckle up because we’re taking the kitchen back to 1985 in this time traveling bonus episode to make a vintage batch of digitalSoup!

—-more—-TECHNOLOGY NEWS

With things continuing to change faster than the world has ever seen we’ve had a ton of new technological advancements! This stuff is seriously mind blowing dude!

Symbolics.com

With something they are calling a domain name, the company Symbolics Corporation has apparently registered the very first .com domain name. Is that pronounced “Period Com” or “Dot Com”? Big news because up until now we’ve only really seen the .edu domains for educational insitutions. This internet thing seems interesting but maybe a little gimmicky.

Compact Discs
Now these have been around for a bit but they are kind of expensive still. I saw at Radio Shack they had a Compact Disc Digital Audio Player and it comes in at about $400 but for the amazing sound quality it may be worth it! They are even coming out with some portable compact disc players called a discman so you can take your music with you!The band Dire Straits and their album Brothers in Arms, which includes of course their massive hit song Money for Nothing, is the first band/album to sell 1 million copies on CD alone! Of course other artists are on the CD train with David Bowie making history as the first artist to convert his entire catalog to CD. That’s 15 albums plus his 4 greatest hits albums.

Steve Jobs

Big news as he quit Apple this past September. Is this the end for Apple? Will the be able to hold on as a company without him?

Microsoft just released Windows 1.0

In an attempt to compete with Apple, Microsoft has released their new Windows line. But it just doesn’t seem like it’s going to work.

MOVIE NEWS
It’s been a great year for movies, in fact so good that we thought we’d talk about some of our favorites as we near the end of the year! From Goonies and Back to the Future to Rambo and Rocky sequels it’s been a super rad year at the theater!
Back to the Future

Rambo: First Blood Part II

Rocky IV

Goonies

Cocoon

Police Academy 2 : Their First Assignment

A View To a Kill

COMIC’S NEWS
UD has a few interesting things he’s been reading including some new books and even a new comic strip that is super fun!

Calvin & Hobbes

Created by Bill Watterson, this new strip just debuted in November, but it’s so much fun! It’s about a young boy named Calvin  and his stuffed animal tiger named Hobbes. What’s fun is that to Calvin, Hobbes is a real tiger and his best friend. But to the rest of the world Hobbes is just a stuffed animal. Really a cool comic strip that’s often very funny!

Crisis on Infinite Earths

This series from DC Comics is pretty messed up and seems to be a way for DC to try to reset and streamline 50 years of continuity issues from their comics. Seems like they are trying to wipe out the whole idea of the multiverse but what is crazy it that they seem to be hinting that there could be some pretty major deaths to characters coming, such as Barry Allen/The Flash and even possibly Supergirl!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
A small independant comic book company has this new book out called The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! A really awesome story where four turtles and a rat are mutated by some sort of radioactive material and the turtles become Ninjas trained by the rat. Seems to actually be pretty heavily inspired by the Daredevil character but really an awesome premise that will hopefully stick around with more issues.

The Weekly Garnish

Could there be life on Mars? Is the iPhone 8 set to take Samsung’s battery issue title? It’s a fast moving week covering a lot of ground including some pretty bold claims from Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018, some expensive boneheaded moves with domain names and news from the Google Pixel 2 event. There be water on Mars!

With the recent discovery that there is more ice/water on Mars than originally thought, will this make future Mars missions a bit easier since they may have a water source there instead of bringing their own? Does that mean there can be life on Mars and does this make things easier for Elon Musk and his SpaceX program as they still plan to send humans to Mars in 7 years?

iPhone 8 Plus splitting open from charging

A real concern or is this a random occurrence? Will these reported battery issues take the heat off of Samsung and their flaming batteries and put it squarely on Apple?

Adobe Announces Elements 2018

Looks like they are bringing in some interesting upgrades to the Photoshop Elements line, but is it worth the money when you can get the Photography CC bundle from Adobe for $10/month?

Also, does anyone have $2600 so Jason can get his old domain,  nostalgiagaming.com, back?

Even more bad news for users of CCleaner.  We now know the attack was worse than initially thought. 40 years ago the tech world was changing

Taking a look back at what sort of tech was out there 40 years ago, 1977. It’s actually a pretty big year for tech, gadgets and geekery!

Amazon’s latest tablet is also an Echo?

With the announcement of the new Fire HD 10. Amazon has added the hands free voice services of Alexa to their latest tablet. At around the $200 mark, is this new tablet a viable alternative to the highly acclaimed iPad?

Amazon is also looking at Smart Glasses
See what I did there, “looking” at “Smart Glasses”. Anyways, it seems that Amazon wants a piece of that sweet Google Glass Pie. Though as of now they aren’t looking at a screen for the glasses, simply a bone conducted Alexa voice assistant built right in.

The Google Home Mini

IF this ends up being a real thing, which we’ll know soon since Google is set to announce it in early October, Google will be doing their best to take a potentially serious bite out of Amazon’s bottom line.

Blasting through some movie and tv talk, the guys discuss the new Tomb Raider trailer set to release in 2018, an intense looking survival movie called The Mountain Between Us starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslett, The Punisher dropping sometime soon, but Netflix is being tight lipped about it and of course the new Star Trek series that just debuted along with The Orville.

Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, has spoken in an interview with The Financial Times recently and stated that Nintendo did not manipulate the pre-orders of the Mini SNES Classic. In the same interview he urged customers not to pay anymore than the $80 asking price when buying from an auction site because they will have plenty of supply when the game console hits the shelves. Do we believe him or is this just Nintendo trying to put out the flames from angry customers that are giving up on even caring about Nintendo?

Plus Usually Dave spills the beans on the No Peek 365 Photography Challenge he is taking part in and what the heck is all this buttfumes.com talk?

 —-more—-

Weekly Riddle:
This old one runs forever, but never moves at all. He has not lungs or throat, but still a mighty roaring call. What is it?

Answer at the end of the episode!

Crashplan exits consumer backup game

With the news that CrashPlan was pulling out of the consumer backup service game a lot of people were panicking. Meanwhile Backblaze absolutely killed it with a terrific social media blitz and may have cleaned house.

Walking Dead meet Pokemon Go:

Called The Walking Dead: Our World, this new mobile game for iOS and Android looks to take the zombie killing fun that fans of the show love and mash it up with the augmented reality mobile gaming concept from Pokemon Go. There’s no release date just yet, but will you be lining up to slay zombies and try to survive when it hits the app stores?

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges

Speaking of AR games, you wanna be a Jedi master and have light saber duels with some of the biggest Jedi and Sith villains in the Star Wars universe?

A real life Dr. Frankenstein.
An Italian Neurosurgeon named Sergio Canvero is claiming that next fall in China he is going to complete a Full Body Transplant, swapping heads on real human bodies, in a procedure dubbed as HEAVEN. HEAVEN is short for Head Anastomosis Venture. This is some scary sh*t!

Weekly Riddle:
An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn’t know which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father’s fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?
Answer at the end of the episode!

The Funko Pop Twitter account is hacked by pirates of a specific kind.
Friday afternoon UD was browsing Twitter and saw a series of hilarious messages being posted by the Funko Twitter account. Hacked or poor taste in marketing a new product?

Are VPNs Only For Pirates?

Arr!  Why use a VPN?  There are many reasons and it’s not just to hide some nefarious online activities.
